Michigan Defeats Oakland 17-6

CCLA Undefeated Streak Continues

Rochester Hills, Mich. -- The last time the Michigan men’s lacrosse team lost a CCLA game was in April of 1998, so when the two-time defending conference champions took the field today at Oakland University, they were looking to continue that streak. The Golden Grizzlies scored first and kept it close through one quarter, but when Jeff Hadwin (Vestal, NY/Vestal HS) scored his second of the day with 3:15 to go in the 1st Michigan was on it’s way to scoring 14 unanswered goals, until Oakland could find the net again with 4:53 to go in the game. A couple of late Grizzlie goals made the final score 17-6.

The 2nd ranked Wolverines improve to 13-1 (6-0 CCLA), while Oakland falls to 6-4 (4-3 CCLA).
Eric DeLamarter (Concord,MA/Concord-Carlisle HS) led the Wolverines with 5 points on 2 goals and 3 assists. Hadwin added 3 goals and 1 assist, and Ben Herbst (Pikesville, MD/Pikesville HS) added 3 goals.

After Sooman Kim (Troy, MI/Troy HS) kept things in hand for the first half with 4 saves, backup goalie Jeremy Menkowitz (Fort Washington, PA/Germantown Academy) played the second half, recording 7 saves and allowing three late fourth quarter goals. Brandon Krieter went all the way for Oakland, making 12 saves and allowing 17 goals. Towbey Kassa led all Grizzlie scorers with 1 goal and 3 assists.

Michigan concludes the regular season next Saturday, April 21 with a home contest against the #11 Colorado Buffalos. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.

NOTES
• Michigan’s 30 game win streak in the CCLA, dating back to April of 1998, can continue at the CCLA Tournament April 27-29 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Wolverines will go in as the #1 seed.

• Tom Burns sat out his fifth consecutive game with an ankle injury. He is expected back next week against Colorado.

• Jeff Hadwin’s 3 goals added to his Michigan career record (since the inception of the USLIA) 241.

• The team will practice Monday, then take three days off before practicing again to allow time to prepare for final exams, which begin Thursday.

QUOTES
UM Head Coach John Paul
On improvement from the last game…”Our intensity was much better today than it was last night against Marquette. We still were not very focused, though. We made a lot of mental mistakes. Colorado will be a crucial game for us heading into the post-season.”

On the CCLA tournament…”We know we are going, and Marquette knows they are in, but I don’t know if the other four spots are set. There are some important games this week to determine who goes and what the seedings will be. Oakland – Michigan State this Tuesday is huge.”

On Tom Burns…”It will be nice to finally get Tommy back this week. He’s an important part of our offense. We don’t have a lot of guys who can break down a defense like he can, so he has been missed.”
