Hadwin’s 4 Goals Lead Michigan to Non-Conference Victory

GAINESVILLE, Florida – The #4 Michigan Men’s Lacrosse team used 3 second half goals from Jeff Hadwin (Vestal, New York/Vestal HS) to help open up a close game tonight against #22 Florida.  Clinging to a 5-3 halftime lead, the Wolverines outscored the Gators 7-3 in the second half en route to a 12 – 6 victory.

Michigan got on the board first as Chip Thomas (Tenafly, New Jersey/Dwight-Englewood HS) scored his first of the year 1:56 into the game on an outside shot that found the upper-left corner of the net.  Florida’s Chris O’Donnell answered 4 ˝ minutes later after a brilliant stick fake froze the Michigan defense.

The Wolverines then rattled off the next three goals to end the first quarter with a 4 - 1 lead.  Tom Burns (Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice HS) gave Michigan the lead again when he beat his defender from the wing.  Brian Marchena (Troy, Mich./Country Day HS) widened the gap when his split dodge freed him up from the top, and Hadwin finished the first quarter scoring off a feed from Burns.

The officials took over the second quarter as 11 flags were thrown.  Florida’s Danny Hogan scored two of his four goals in the quarter, and Michigan could only answer with one Marchena goal on a shot that hit the pipe and rebounded off Gator goalie Steve Maszey into the net.  The halftime score stood at 5 - 3.

In the third quarter Michigan quickly built a four goal lead.  Hadwin scored his second off a Ben Herbst (Pikesville, Maryland/Pikesville HS) feed 2:55 into the quarter.  Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) took the ensuing faceoff straight to the goal and scored 11 seconds later to make it 7 – 3 and give the Wolverines a bit of breathing room.  The Gators scored the next two on a pair of Danny Hogan goals, his third and fourth of the game, to bring the margin back to two.  Marchena scored his third on a diving shot and Eric DeLamarter (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle HS) added a goal off a feed from Burns to give Michigan another four goal lead after three quarters.  Michigan goalie Sooman Kim (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) had 5 third quarter saves.

The fourth quarter was all Michigan as Florida ran out of steam.  Hadwin scored his third and fourth of the game, and Dave Bernard (Litchfield, Conn./Westminster HS) finished the scoring to make the final 12 – 6.  All three goals were assisted by Kevin Chan (Manhasset, New York, Manhasset HS).

Michigan’s next game is Sunday, March 4 against Division I varsity Siena at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the game overall…”We still have a lot of kinks to work out.  We’re playing hard, but we’re not playing smart lacrosse.  We’ll need to be much more focused against Siena this weekend.”

On Florida…”Florida is a team that may surprise some people this year.  They have some skilled players, and they play hard.  They are a great addition for the SELC.”

On Michigan’s inability to score man-up…”We have 4 guys in our man-up unit who weren’t in there last year, so we’re going through an adjustment right now.  We’ll spend some time on it in practice this week.”
