Wolverines Dominate Boilermakers to Open 2002 Campaign

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- Freshman attackman Ryan Clark (Summit, N.J./Summit) scored two goals and added four assists in his first game for the Wolverines as they topped the Purdue Boilermakers 16-3 tonight at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.  The Wolverines’ defense dominated all night as they held the Boilermakers to just seven shots on goal all game.

Michigan jumped out quickly, as junior attackman Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) scored just 16 seconds in to the game after collecting his own rebound.  Michigan struck next when Clark dodged his defenseman and beat Purdue goalie Adam Finney with 10:27 remaining in the quarter.  The Wolverines then scored two goals in just nine seconds as sophomore midfielder Justin Gal (Amherst, MA/Milton Academy) and Buchan-McGilliard each scored one to end the first quarter with a 4-0 lead.

Purdue struck first in the second quarter as Kurt Mason beat Michigan goalie Sooman Kim (Troy, MI/Troy) on an extra man opportunity.  That would be all the Boilermakers would get in the half, as sophomore attackman Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), freshman attackman Ray Lombardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) and freshman midfielder Brad Smith (Miami, FL/Gulliver Prep) closed out the Wolverine scoring for a 7-1 halftime score.

The Wolverines’ dominance continued in the third quarter as they outscored the Boilermakers 6-1, including Lombardi’s two goals on the crease in the final minute.  Junior midfielder Chip Thomas (Tenafly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) scored both his goals in the third quarter with hard shots from the top.  Freshman midfielder Bobby Groenke (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) scored his only goal of the game with a feed from Clark.  The fourth quarter featured fewer goals, as Hanna and Gal found the back of the net and sophomore attackmen Evan Sonderman (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle) and Paul Mans (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) connected for the Wolverines’ final goal.

NOTES

-The win extends Michigan’s CCLA winning streak to 33, dating back to 1998.

-Clark, Lombardi, Groenke, and Smith all recorded their first career goals for Michigan.  Clark recorded six points on the night (2G, 4A), while Lombardi led the Wolverines in goals with three.

-The Wolverines will next face Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, February 23.  The game against the Sun Devils kicks off a three-game spring break trip to the Southwest.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On tonight’s game: “Overall, I’m happy with tonight for our first game.  We did a lot of the things we intended to do.  There was not a lot in our game plan, I just wanted the team to execute.  I’m especially satisfied that we hustled all game and dominated the ground balls.”

On facing the upcoming road trip: “Right now we are where we want to be.  I even think we may be ahead of where I want us to be, with us being so young.  I expect a similar game with Arizona State as tonight, since they are another athletic team.  After that, the difficult part of our schedule starts out with our game against Arizona.”

UM Junior Midfielder Chip Thomas

On the team’s effort: “We were consistent and we hustled every play, and that’s what we’ve been stressing all week.  We were able to test our offensive and defensive ability against a quality team.”
