UM Improves to 2-0 by Dominating Sun Devils 12-4

TEMPE, Ariz.-- The Michigan men’s lacrosse team dominated every statistical category over Arizona State and won by a deceiving score of 12-4.  Freshman attackman Ryan Clark (Summit, NJ/Summit) led the Wolverines again in points with one goal and three assists while senior midfielder Eric DeLamarter (Concord-Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle) scored his first points of the season by recording a hat trick.  Midfielder Chris Blentzos led the way for Arizona State, notching three goals and one assist.

Michigan again started out quickly, scoring the first goal of the game in less than a minute for the second game in a row when junior midfielder Chip Thomas (Tenafly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) carried the ball in and bounced it past Arizona State goalie John Birch 28 seconds into the game.  Thomas finished with two goals and 1 assist.  The Wolverines struck again with 13:31 left when DeLamarter was fed on the crease from Clark.  Michigan played with tough defense and riding and held the Sun Devils without a shot all quarter.   Sophomore midfielder John Schwartz (White Plains, NY/Fordham Prep) finished the scoring in the quarter for a 7-0 lead when he received a feed from freshman attackman Ray Lombardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) from behind for his first goal of the season.

The second quarter started out slower, as Michigan could not find the net until 9:25 left when sophomore midfielder Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) scored one of his two goals with an assist from Lombardi.  Arizona State finally scored with 2:53 remaining in the half when Blentzos scored unassisted.  Toller scored again with a feed from junior attackman Sloan Buchan McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) to finish the half with a 10-1 lead.

Arizona State started the scoring in the second half when Blentzos again scored unassisted.  Michigan would score its only goal of the quarter when DeLamarter came around the right side of the goal and took a feed from Thomas.  The Sun Devils struck back when Blentzos fed attackman Chad Littell for a goal to close to 11-3.  Both teams got just one goal in the fourth quarter, as Blentzos scored his third for Arizona State and sophomore attackman Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored an extra-man goal with a feed from Clark.

The Wolverines grabbed 65 ground balls to the Sun Devils’ 17 and won 17 out of 20 face-offs.  Michigan plays its next game on Wednesday night when they travel to Tucson to face the University of Arizona at 7:00 p.m.
