TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona goalie Sean Koeffel had 23 saves as the 13th-ranked Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter en route to an 8-7 upset of 4th-ranked Michigan. Junior midfielder Chip Thomas (Tenafly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) led the way for the Wolverines with two goals and two assists. Sophomore attackman Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) added two goals and one assist. The game started out slowly, as the first shot of the game did not take place until 10:32 when freshman midfielder Bobby Groenke (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) shot the ball wide of the goal. Arizona midfielder Bryan Moore scored the first goal of the game when he beat junior goalie Sooman Kim (Troy, MI/Troy) with a hard, low shot from the top with 8:08 remaining. The Wildcats struck again less than a minute later as attackman Chris Mink scored off a feed from James Locheridge. Arizona added two more to finish the quarter with a 4-0 lead. Michigan scored quickly into the second quarter to get on the board as senior midfielder Eric DeLamarter (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) scored off an assist from Thomas. Arizona extended the lead to 5-1 when Mink scored again. The two teams would score once more each to finish the half with a 6-2 Arizona lead. The first half was relatively penalty-free, as Arizona committed the only three offenses. Michigan was unable to close the gap in the third quarter as their two goals, both by Hanna, were matched by two goals scored by Arizona. However, attackman Josh Morrisson’s goal with 5:39 left would be the last goal scored by the Wildcats all game. Arizona had a chance to extend their 8-4 lead even further early in the fourth quarter, but Kim made three key point-blank saves to keep the Wolverines in the game. Kim finished with 12 saves, a season high. Michigan finally caught fire with 2:45 remaining in the game when junior attackman Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) scored unassisted to narrow the Wildcats’ lead to 8-5. On the play, Arizona was called for two slashing penalties. With the two-man advantage, Buchan-McGilliard fed Thomas just 29 seconds later to cut the lead to two. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) won the ensuing face-off and freshman attackman Ryan Clark (Summit, NJ/Summit) scored with a feed from Hanna to cut the lead to one with just 52 seconds left. Toller again won a key face-off and the Wolverines called timeout. On the ensuing possession, however, they were unable to score the tying goal and the Wildcats were able to preserve the win, despite being outscored 5-0 in the last 19:21 of the game.
NOTES
● Arizona had an interesting selection of music for pre-game warmups, playing Madonna’s “Borderline” and the New Kids on the Block’s “I’ll Be Loving You” as the Wildcats were in the locker room and the Wolverines were warming up, possibly in an attempt to pacify the Wolverines. It may have worked, as Arizona was able to start out with a four-goal lead. ● There were 8 penalties in the second half, compared to 3 in the first. 7 of the 8 in the second half were Arizona penalties. ● Michigan came out on top on the statistics sheet, collecting 41 ground balls to Arizona’s 27 and outshooting the Wildcats 47-27. Michigan also won 12 of the 18 face-offs. ● Arizona goalie Sean Koeffel’s 23 saves are the most by a Michigan opponent since Robbie Warner of California stopped 37 Wolverine shots in 2000. ● Michigan will next face the Cougars from Brigham Young University at 7:00 p.m. this Saturday in Provo, Utah. The game will be nationally televised on BYU-TV.
QUOTES
UM Head Coach John PaulOn the team’s fourth quarter comeback … “We showed a lot of heart. The guys really felt like we could win this game all the way to final whistle. With such a young team, I’m really enthused by our attitude. We never folded it in. Sooman (Kim) came up huge with some stuffs that kept us in striking distance, and Toller won some absolutely huge faceoffs at the end to give us chances to score. I hate this cliché, because I hate to lose, but this may have been exactly what we needed at this point in the season.” On the team’s inability to score even-up goals … “Only three of our seven goals were in six on six situations, and that’s something we have to work on. Part of that was certainly due to Arizona – they played outstanding defense, and their goalie, Koffel, was hot – but we got 47 shots to their 27. They didn’t do anything that surprised us, though. We need to do a better job capitalizing. We shoot better in that game, and it’s a blowout the other way.” On Arizona’s improvement … “That is a very good Arizona team. They are as good as I’ve seen them since I’ve been coaching. (First year coach) Adam Hopkins and his staff have them heading in the right direction. I expect to see them challenge for the WCLL title this year.”
