Site: Provo, Utah (South Field) Score: #4 Michigan 9, #3 Brigham Young 12 Records: UM (2-2), BYU (5-2) Next U-M Game: Friday, March 8 -- vs. California (Ann Arbor, Mich.), 7 p.m. EST
Brigham Young Attack Too Much for Michigan PROVO, Utah -- 3rd-ranked Brigham Young, led by a combined 9 goals and 5 assists from the attack trio of Rex Hardy, Jordan Archibald, and Mike Lee, used a strong second quarter to open up a 7-1 lead on their way to a 12-9 victory over #4 Michigan. Archibald led the way for Brigham Young with 4 goals and 2 assists, including 3 goals in the second half to secure the victory for the Cougars. Michigan (2-2) was led by sophomore midfielder Justin Gal (Amherst, MA/Milton Academy), who had 3 goals, including two in the final quarter. Michigan started the game out strong and seemed unfazed by the conditions—bitter cold, windy weather and an altitude of 4,000 feet. Sophomore attackman Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored the first goal of the game on the crease with an assist from freshman attackman Ryan Clark (Summit, NJ/Summit). The Wolverines controlled the tempo at the beginning, using effective takeaway checks to prevent BYU from getting into their settled offense. BYU finally got on the board with 4:26 remaining when Lee scored with an assist from Archibald in an unsettled situation. BYU would add two more to end the quarter with a 3-1 lead. Archibald scored the first goal of the second quarter when Hardy fed him from behind with 13:51 remaining. Lee scored next for the Cougars on an extra man opportunity when he tipped in a rebound off the ground in front of the crease. This set off a string of three consecutive BYU extra man goals that gave the Cougars a 7-1 lead. Michigan scored a man-up goal of its own with just seven seconds remaining when junior midfielder Chip Thomas (Tenafly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) scored with an assist from sophomore attackman Ray Lombardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) to end the half down by five goals. Thomas narrowed the lead for the Wolverines when he scored the first goal quickly into the second half. BYU answered with yet another extra man goal when midfielder Dave Rueckert scored from the top. BYU would control the ball for a while, and Michigan was unable to score until 6:02 remaining when Gal swept across the top and beat BYU goalie Ryan Andrus. Archibald fed Hardy on the crease with just two seconds remaining to end the quarter with a 9-4 BYU lead. A key turnover to start the fourth quarter gave BYU a fast break and the Cougars capitalized, as Archibald scored from Hardy’s assist. Michigan continued its trend of turning the ball over frequently, preventing any chance of making a strong comeback. Goals by freshman midfielder Bobby Groenke (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) and junior midfielder Brian Marchena (Troy, MI/Detroit Country Day) gave the Wolverines hope, but it was too little, too late. For the second game in a row, Michigan scored three goals in the final three minutes, including two from Gal and an extra-man goal by Hanna, and the game ended with a 12-9 BYU victory.
NOTES

QUOTES
UM Head Coach John PaulOn Michigan’s inability to stop BYU’s attack…”Hardy and Archibald are outstanding. They are both big and strong, and they work well together. All three of their guys at that end are finishers. To be successful against BYU you have to limit their opportunities, and we didn’t do that.” On the offense’s difficulty in creating shots…”We turned the ball over way too much. Unforced errors really hurt us tonight. We also didn’t do a real good job breaking down their defense, and when we did, BYU did a nice job recovering. We need to be a bit more aggressive at times. I thought we passed up some pretty good opportunities to shoot. We have a lot of young guys at that end of the field. We'll keep improving as the season goes on.” On the team’s penalties in the second quarter…”We took way too many penalties tonight, especially in the second quarter when they got three man-up goals. Some of those were our mistakes, but sometimes you also have to overcome some home field advantages, and that certainly seemed to be the case tonight. We let the officiating frustrate us a bit instead of playing through it.” On the game conditions…”I read that BYU blamed the heat and lights in Oosterbaan on their loss in Ann Arbor last year, so I guess I’ll blame our loss tonight on the cold and lights. Seriously, I don’t think the cold was a huge factor for either team. It wasn’t as windy as it was yesterday when we practiced out here, and without the wind the cold is much more manageable. Both teams were sloppier than we wanted to be, but I don’t think it was because of the weather.” On the team’s confidence heading into the Cal game…”We definitely wanted to play better tonight. Our goal this year, with such a young team, is to improve every game and try to be ready for the post season. We took a step back tonight in some areas, which surprised me a bit. This week of practice will be key for us. We have to refocus and get ready for Cal next weekend. Our schedule doesn’t get any easier.”
