Michigan Defense Stifles Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- Every time Michigan travels to Milwaukee to face Marquette the winter winds start blowing, and this time was no different as game time temperatures hovered in the low teens and a stiff wind made it feel much colder.  The Michigan defense warmed up quickly enough to put Marquette's offense in a deep freeze, holding them to only 8 shots in a dominating 10-2 victory tonight.

Michigan's Ray Lombardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) opened the scoring at 11:41 on an extra man opportunity, when he gathered in a pass, dodged two lunging defenders, and then bounced the ball past Marquette goalie Andy Ziegenhorn.  Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) scored less then a minute later when his defender slipped and he ripped a left hander into the top shelf.  Toller won the ensuing faceoff to wing Dave DiCamillo (Port Washington, NY/Port Washington) who found Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) who dodged one defender and made it 3-0 before Marquette could get settled.

The Wolverines scored three more times in the 2nd quarter to go up 6-0, with Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scoring twice and Toller netting his second, before Marquette's Chris Brody could stop the bleeding with just 13 seconds to play before halftime.  The Michigan defense did not allow Marquette to possess the ball most of the night.  With Michigan's possession offense limiting opportunities, the defense, led by DiCamillo, John Morgan (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side), Charles Appel (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia), Mike Roth (South Orange, NJ/Kimberley-Montclair) and Kirk Kozel (Barrington, IL/Taft, Ct.) forced frequent Marquette turnovers and took the ball away numerous times.

The Wolverines scored twice early in the 3rd quarter to go up 8-1, before Marquette could manage another goal.  Two late Michigan goals made the final score 10-2.  Toller had another outstanding day facing off, winning 10 against only 4 losses.

Michigan faces #19 Minnesota-Duluth here in Milwaukee this Sunday at noon.

NOTES

Michigan's leading scorer, Chip Thomas (Tenefly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood), was diagnosed late last week with achilles tendonitis.  He had been recovering from a broken toe, but this latest setback will keep him out this weekend.  It is hoped he'll be ready to play against Colorado State on April 5.  Bobby Groenke (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) also remains out, recovering from a deep hip bruise, but should be back at practice in a week.

Sunday's opponent, Minnesota-Duluth, was in the stands for the game.  They face Marquette tomorrow at noon.  Last year Michigan beat UMD, the UMLL Champion, 15-7 in the first round of the USLIA Tournament.  It was their first meeting.

With the win, Michigan extends their CCLA win streak to 35 games, dating back to the 1998 season.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the offense: “We still have some real offensive concerns, but we were doing a couple of new things tonight that the guys are getting a handle on.  We were also missing Chip Thomas, who is a big part of our offense.  We need to get Chip and Bobby back as soon as possible.  It's impossible not to miss those guys.”

On the cold: “I thought it was cold in Provo a few weeks ago.  This was colder.  I though the guys did a pretty good job blocking out the cold.  I'm sure the game would have been better played in better conditions, but we did a pretty good job tonight staying focused in tough conditions."

On the defense: “Our defense played a pretty dominating game tonight.  We played a little more aggressively than we usually do, but our team concept was still there.  I thought we did a good job sliding when we needed to, and recovering if they moved the ball quickly.  We have the capability to be a dominating defense every night.  We need to keep moving in that direction if we're going to have success at the end of the season.”
