Michigan Overwhelms Minnesota-Duluth

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- Playing in frigid, windy conditions for the second time in three days showed its toughness by shutting out 19th-ranked Minnesota-Duluth’s offense in the second half and winning another game by a convincing margin, 17-4.  Freshman midfielder Brad Smith (Miami, FL/Gulliver Prep) led the team with four goals.  Smith was promoted to one of the top two midfield lines after injuries disabled junior Chip Thomas (Tenafly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) and freshman Bobby Groenke (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier).  Freshman Ryan Clark (Summit, NJ/Summit) led the attack with three goals and three assists, while sophomore midfielder Justin Gal (Amherst, MA/Milton Academy) added three goals.

Temperatures dipped into the teens and winds exceeded 20 mph, creating difficult conditions for offenses.  However, both teams started out quickly, as Gal scored for the Wolverines in the first minute of the game.  Minnesota-Duluth had an answer with 13:21 remaining to tie the game at 1.  Gal struck again with Michigan’s second goal and a flurry of goals ended the quarter with a 6-3 Wolverine advantage.  Michigan outscored the Bulldogs 4-1 in the second quarter to take a 10-4 lead going into the break.  The Wolverine defense shut the Bulldogs down from there, as Michigan scored seven second-half goals to close out the game 17-4.

Michigan gets a much needed break next weekend before hosting the annual Michigan Invitational April 5-7 in Ann Arbor.  First up is defending national champion, and #2 ranked, Colorado State on Friday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m.  The Wolverines face #11 Texas A&M on the 6th and #15 Buffalo on the 7th.

NOTES

This was Michigan’s second convincing victory over a ranked team this season.  The Wolverines demolished  then 9th-ranked California on March 8 in Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines were very efficient on clearing opportunities, converting 21 out of 26 opportunities.

The defense did an excellent job of eliminating Minnesota-Duluth’s opportunities, holding the Bulldogs to 13 shots, compared to Michigan’s 44.

The Wolverines maintained their domination on face-offs, winning 16 to the Bulldogs’ 9.  Michigan has held the advantage in face-offs in 9 out of 10 games this season.

Smith's 4 goals more than doubled his season point totals heading into the game.  He had played in 6 games to that point, and had totaled 3 goals.  He was 4 for 6 shooting in the game today.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the game in general: “This is the first complete game we've played this year.  The guys kept working hard from the opening whistle, they stayed focused, and they executed pretty well.  This is exactly what we need heading into the games we have coming up.”

On the weather this weekend: “Every time we come to Milwaukee it's cold and windy.  Two years ago we were here in late April, and it was unseasonably cold.  I guess we should expect it when we come here. I though we did a nice job today ignoring the elements and just playing the game.  Our sideline was terrific.  They stayed into it and supported the guys who were out there, even though it was really uncomfortable to be standing and not playing."

On the defensive domination this weekend: “Honestly, we're still not where we want to be.  We are really limiting the number of shots we're seeing, but we are making too many mistakes because of lack of focus or lack of intensity that should not be happening at this point.  I don't think we can keep using our youth as an excuse.  Our next game is against Colorado State - we must improve by then or we'll be in trouble.”
