Hanna, Defense Combine to Take Apart Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Jeff Hanna's (Fayatteville, NY/Fayatteville-Manlius) 5 goals and 2 assists led 7th ranked Michigan to a dominant 20-3 victory over CCLA foe Indiana tonight.  For the fourth straight game the Wolverine defense held an opponent to less than 20 shots.  This time the shooting totals came out to 66 to 14 in Michigan's favor.

The Wolverines felt right at home as the game was played in Indiana's indoor football building, Mellencamp Pavilion, which is similar in many respects to Michigan's own Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.  Although Indiana was able to get off 5 shots in the first quarter, mostly on transition, the Wolverine offense controlled the ball for long stretches and peppered Hoosier goalie Willy Knight with 14 shots.  The first of those shots to find their mark came when freshman midfielder Bobby Groenke (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) drove down the right side, changed direction to beat the initial slide, and found Hanna alone on the crease at 11:11.  Just over two minutes later Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer), back after missing a week with a concussion, beat his man and fired one past Knight to put Michigan up 2-0.  Toller won the ensuing faceoff toward the offensive half, split the defense, and scored again just 9 seconds later to build the lead to 3-0, which is how the first quarter ended.

Justin Gal (Amherst, MA/Milton Academy) opened the scoring in the second quarter with a pair of goals, as the Wolverines continued to dominate possession.  Indiana had trouble clearing the ball all day, and when they did get it to their offensive half, they often committed costly turnovers or had the ball taken away by the Michigan defense.  The Hoosiers' lone first half goal came at the 2:43 mark, with Michigan leading 8-1, when Tom Ross beat Sooman Kim (Troy, MI/Troy) after a rare UM turnover.  Groenke closed out the scoring in the quarter with 23 seconds remaining to put Michigan up 9-1.

The second half was even more one-sided, even though the Wolverines began substituting liberally from the opening faceoff.  The Hoosiers only managed 2 shots in the third quarter and 3 more in the fourth, although two of those found their way into the net.  The Michigan defense held Indiana's leading scorer, Jon Hatton, to just 5 shots and a single assist on the night.  Michigan's Andy Vilardo (Rockville, MD/Wootton), Anthony Ragnone (Flint, MI/Powers) and Adam Dubin (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) each scored their first goals of the season in the fourth to help pace the Wolverines.

Michigan wraps up their regular season, and goes for their 39th straight CCLA victory, next Saturday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor.

NOTES

Despite missing last week to rest a concussion suffered against Texas A&M a week ago, Toller continued his winning ways at the faceoff X, winning 9 of 10 to start the game.  The only loss came on a procedure call when the Michigan attack was ruled to have released to early.  Unfortunately, Toller was hit hard near the end of the second quarter and may have suffered another concussion.  He sat the rest of the game as a precaution and will be evaluated this week.

The Wolverines dominated statistically in every area.  They won 21 of 26 faceoffs, collected 59 ground balls to 29 for Indiana, outshot the Hoosiers 66 to 14, found the net on 3 of 9 EMO opportunities compared to IU's 1 of 4, and cleared the ball 27 times on 36 attempts while forcing Indiana to fail on 26 of their 36 clear attempts.

Hanna's 5 goals and 7 total points were both career highs.

Ragnone's goal early in the fourth Dubin's goal to close out the scoring were the first in their Michigan careers.

Sophomore attackman Ray Lombardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest), a key fixture on the Michigan extra-man unit, went down late in the game with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.  His status will be assessed back in Ann Arbor.

This was the fourth straight game, and the eighth time this season, the Michigan defense has held an opponent to fewer than 20 shots.  Opponents are averaging just 20.4 shots per game against Michigan this season so far.

The Wolverines wrap up the regular season at home next Saturday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. against #23 Missouri.  A Michigan win would extend their CCLA win streak to 39 straight games, dating back to 1998.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the game in general: "Once again, we did what we had to do.  This was a tough game to play.  With finals starting this week, we didn't want to take too much travel time if we could manage it.  We bussed down here today, and we're bussing back tonight, which will get us home around 6:00 a.m., so it's not something we've been looking forward to.  The guys played fairly inspired despite that."

On the injury situation: "This has been a tough season for us.  We have two guys out now with season ending injuries (Keenan and Anderson), and it's possible now that we've lost Ray (Lombardi) tonight for the rest of the year.  We'll know more tomorrow when our doctors can look at him.  Ray would be a big loss.  He's a big part of our offense and such a great guy to have in practice because of his work ethic.  We'll hope for the best.  Toller's situation is a little scary.  If it turns out he suffered another concussion tonight, we'll have to rest him for a long enough time to safely bring him back.  He is so dominant on faceoffs, we miss him when he's not in there.  Michigan State exploited that a bit this week when Toller was out.  We need him back when we know it's safe, but we won't push it."

On the dominance of the defense: "We've had some success on defense for a couple of reasons.  Most importantly, our defense is starting to come together and really trust each other.  Just as importantly, we're dominating possession time in our games, which puts very little pressure on our defense.  The downside is that they can tend to relax a bit when they go such long stretches without any action on their end.  It's something we have to address."

On the play of Michigan's subs: "I was proud of some of the guys who got in the last few games who don't get many opportunities.  Silverman did an especially good job this week at defense, and Mans has shown flashes of what he's capable of doing offensively.  Matt Bernard did a good job at defense this week as well.  With Anderson out and Goodman sick, some guys are getting chances to step in when we sub defensively right now, and for the most part, they're doing a nice job."

On Jeff Hanna: "I thought Hanna played his best game Wednesday against State, but he really stepped it up again tonight.  He's finally starting to get comfortable in his role, and it's showing."
