Season Ends on Familiar Note; Hanna, Defense Dominate Missouri

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore attackman Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) continued his hot streak with five goals and one assist as Michigan held Missouri scoreless over the last 49:47 of the game to win 20-1.  Junior attackman Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) also added three goals and three assists for Michigan (14-2).  Mike Brauss scored the only goal for Missouri (11-3).  Michigan dominated the shooting battle, with an amazing 78 shots to Missouri’s seven.

After turnovers by both teams, Michigan got the first extra-man opportunity when Missouri attackman John McCool was called with a slashing penalty with 12:55 remaining in the first.  Freshman attackman Ryan Clark (Summit, NJ/Summit) scored just ten seconds into the penalty with a well-placed shot to the upper corner.  Just over a minute later, Buchan-McGilliard added another goal for Michigan after face-dodging his man close to the goal.  After goals by Hanna and Clark, the Tigers scored their only goal of the night on an extra-man opportunity when Mike Brauss cought the ball on the wing, facedodged a Michigan defender, and put it home.  Junior midfielder Jason Gratson (Clinton Twp., MI/De La Salle) extended the lead to 5-1 after a sweep across the top on a set play.

Junior midfielder Chip Thomas (Tenafly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) started the scoring for the second quarter when he put the ball just over the right shoulder of Missouri goalie Pete Stirling.  Both teams then had trouble offensively, and the next goal would not be scored until eight minutes later when senior midfielder Eric DeLamarter (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) scored on an extra-man opportunity with an assist from Buchan-McGilliard.  The Wolverines then scored three goals in just 30 seconds to close out the half with a 10-1 lead—one by Buchan-McGilliard and two by junior midfielder Brian Marchena (Troy, MI/Detroit Country Day).

Michigan head coach John Paul replaced starting junior goalie Sooman Kim (Troy, MI/Troy) with freshman Dan Webber (Weston, MA/Weston) to start the third quarter.  Webber would see no shots in the quarter, however, as the Michigan defense held Missouri without a shot.  Two goals by Hanna and one each from Buchan-McGilliard, freshman midfielder Mike O’Leary (St. Louis, MO/Clayton), and senior long-stick midfielder Dave DiCamillo (Port Washington, NY/Schreiber) gave Michigan a 15-1 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter scoring began on a long clear when freshman defenseman Dave Silverman (Potomac, MD/Churchill) found Hanna open on the crease.  Hanna would add his fifth and final goal a minute later on an extra-man opportunity.  After one save and no goals against, Webber was replaced by sophomore Jerry Perez (Utica, MI/Eisenhower), who would also record one save.  Michigan closed out the scoring with goals by freshman midfielder Trevor Broad (Grosse Pointe, MI/University Liggett), O’Leary, and freshman defenseman Ben Weinbaum (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines).

The Wolverines now have a week to prepare for the CCLA Tournament next weekend in Indianapolis.  Michigan will be the #1 seed going in, and receives an automatic bye into the semifinal round Saturday.  They will play the lowest remaining seed on Saturday, April 27 at 8:00 p.m. CST.

NOTES

With five goals and one assist tonight, Hanna has 24 points (19 goals, 5 assists) in the last four games—an average of 4.75 goals and six points per game.

Sophomore midfielder and face-off specialist Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) did not play tonight after suffering a second concussion last Saturday against Indiana.  Michigan still managed to win the face-off battle, with Marchena and Gal filling in, as they collected 13 face-offs to Missouri’s 10.

O’Leary two goals is a career high.  A St. Louis native, he was playing against many of the same opponents tonight he faced in high school.

The Michigan defense held Missouri attackman Kevin Corcoran, second in the CCLA with 6.45 points per game, scoreless.

Michigan’s scoring was balanced throughout the game, as they scored five goals in each quarter.

Three Wolverines experienced career-firsts tonight.  Goals by Broad and Weinbaum were the first goals and points of their Michigan careers, and Silverman earned his first assist and point on Hanna’s goal early in the fourth quarter.  With Broad’s goal, all but one of Michigan’s midfielders and attackmen have recorded points this season.  Senior Kevin Keenan (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm), who has been out nearly the entire year with a knee injury, is the only exception.

Michigan’s CCLA winning streak is extended to 39, dating back to a 1998 loss to Illinois.  The Wolverines are also on a 12-game winning streak and have won their last 12 home games.

This game marks the sixth time this season Michigan has held its opponent to fewer shots than the Wolverines have goals.   It is also the fifth consecutive game Michigan’s opponent has managed fewer than 20 shots.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the game overall: "I thought we did a good job tonight, especially considering our injury situation right now and the fact that we're right in the middle of finals.  We're trying to stay focused through the end of the year, and I thought we executed fairly well and made a lot of good decisions."

On the play of the attack: "Hanna is just getting better and better, which he needs to do for us to be successful.  He's finishing shots now that he wasn't earlier in the year.  Sloan is really coming into his own as well.  He's playing with more confidence every day.  Clark is so steady.  I've wanted him to be more of a scoring threat as the season has progressed, and he's doing that now.  Those guys have a bigger burden on them now with Lombardi out.  We'll really miss Ray, but if those three can stay healthy and fresh through the rest of the season, we'll be in good shape."

On the play of the defense: "Everyone who is healthy got significant time tonight, and holding them to only seven shots is an amazing accomplishment.  They really are playing well.  I'm still concerned about us getting a little too relaxed down there, just because we haven't played too many games this season where the ball has been at the end at all.  It was great to see some of the guys who don't get a lot of time play so well tonight.  Silverman is becoming a very good defenseman, and he had a really nice assist on a break tonight. Weinbaum had a great goal, too.  We got time for all three goalies, and I thought both Webber and Perez did well in there, especially clearing the ball, which is the one thing they are both a little behind Sooman on."
