Hanna Leads Wolverines to Championship Game

Seven Goal Effort Sparks 40th Straight CCLA Win

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Playing in a driving rainstorm, sophomore attackman Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored seven goals, including six in the third quarter, as Michigan broke out of a 4-4 tie to beat Oakland 17-8.  Michigan advances to the CCLA Final on Sunday against Buffalo, who defeated Washington University 14-5 in the other semifinal.  Sophomore midfielder Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) added two goals and two assists for Michigan (15-2).

The start of the game was delayed over an hour due to lightning.  Once the game began, Michigan junior midfielder Brian Marchena (Troy, MI/Detroit Country Day) struck quickly less than a minute into the game to give Michigan the early lead.  Goals by junior midfielder Chip Thomas (Tenafly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) and Hanna gave Michigan the 3-0 lead with 10:31 remaining in the first quarter.  Hanna’s extra-man goal came after senior long stick midfielder Dave DiCamillo (Port Washington, NY/Schreiber) forced an Oakland turnover and found him on the crease.  The Grizzlies would answer, however, and would go on a 3-1 run into the second quarter to tie the game 4-4 on attackman William Binge’s goal after picking up a loose ball.  Oakland could have jumped out to a lead if not for some key saves from Michigan junior goalie Sooman Kim (Troy, MI/Troy).

Michigan regained control of the game and opened up a 5-4 lead when sophomore midfielder Justin Gal (Amherst, MA/Milton Academy) shot the ball into the upper corner on an extra-man opportunity.  Goals by Thomas at 7:51 and freshman midfielder Brad Smith (Miami, FL/Gulliver Prep) and Toller just nine seconds apart gave Michigan an 8-4 lead.  Attackman Jon Machak scored extra-man with just four seconds left to close the lead to 8-5 going into halftime.

Michigan came out strong in the third quarter, as Hanna scored three quick goals in the first five minutes to give Michigan the 11-5 lead.  Oakland midfielder Jeff Serra closed the gap to 11-6 just as the rain picked up its intensity.  After junior attackman Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) scored after another Hanna goal with a cross-crease feed from freshman attackman Ryan Clark (Summit, NJ/Summit), the game was postponed further due to lightning.  The half-hour delay had little effect on Hanna, as he scored two goals in the final minute of the quarter, both assisted by Toller, to give Michigan the 15-6 advantage.  The rain reached its highest intensity in the fourth quarter, as the teams each scored two goals to close the game at 17-8.

NOTES

With seven goals tonight, Hanna has 26 in the last five games, an average of 5.2 per game.

Hanna’s seven goals is the most scored by a Wolverine in one game since Jeff Hadwin scored eight against #1 Sonoma State in 2001.  Hanna’s six in the third quarter is the most ever scored by a Wolverine in one quarter.

Sophomore midfielder and face-off specialist Kevin Toller (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) returned after missing the Missouri game.  He had an excellent day—in addition to his two goals and two assists, he picked up 14 ground balls and won 20 of his 26 face-offs.

●  Michigan’s last meeting with Oakland was far different, both in terms of the weather and the game itself.  On March 9, Michigan jumped out to a 9-0 lead on Oakland inside Oosterbaan Fieldhouse on their way to a 21-4 victory.

Michigan’s CCLA winning streak is extended to 40, dating back to a 1998 loss to Illinois.  The Wolverines are also on a 13-game winning streak.

Michigan will face 12th-ranked Buffalo tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in the CCLA Division I Championship game immediately after the Division II final between Iowa and Illinois State.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the return of Toller: "Kevin is so valuable to us.  It was certainly great to have him back.  He is an offensive threat, but most importantly his dominance on faceoffs allows us to possess the ball much more than our opponent.  We get break opportunities from faceoffs, and we are able to keep the ball from the other team's offense  It is good to have him back."

On the weather: "There was some doubt as to whether or not we'd get the game in tonight.  Those were some severe thunderstorms.  Fortunately, we were able to wait them out both times, and it didn't really seem to slow down our momentum.  This field is not going to be pretty tomorrow, though."

On the Oakland attack: "Oakland has a very talented attack unit.  Binge is as good as anyone in the conference, and he's only a freshman.  We key on Binge, as everyone has to, and that opens up things a bit for Kassa and Machak.  Our defense has done a good job keeping them in check this season, compared to what they've done to other teams.  They got their points tonight - more than we'd like to give up to them - but we held them down enough to let our offense win it for us."

On the Buffalo game tomorrow: "I'm sure we'll see a much improved Buffalo team, compared to the one we played a few weeks ago at home.  I'm a little concerned about the field conditions.  Sloppy conditions can be an equalizer, so it's going to be important that we play through them and just try to focus on fundamentals and our own game.  It should be exciting."
