Michigan Attack Leads
16-1 Victory Over Loyola Marymount
Los Angeles, Cal. -- All
six Michigan Attackmen contributed at least three points each, as the
Wolverines controlled from start to finish in a 16-1 victory over Loyola
Marymount. After three straight losses to highly ranked teams, the
win was exactly what the Wolverines needed at the end of their 10 day
California trip.
Every uninjured Wolverine
played in the game, but it was the attack that did most of the damage.
Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Ben Herbst (Pikesville, MD/Pikesville) paced the Wolverines
with 2 goals and 2 assists each. Ray Lombardi (Lake
Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Ryan Clark (Summit,
NJ/Summit) scored 3 goals each. Paul Mans (Los Altos
Hills, Cal./Gunn), who got the first start of his career, added a
goal and 3 assists, and Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor,
Mich./Pioneer) dished out 3 assists of his own.
Loyola Marymount came out
in a zone defense that slowed the Wolverine offense a bit, but a
patient, ball possession offense resulted in 3 Michigan goals in the
first quarter. With a decided edge in time of possession, Michigan
outshot the Lions 15 to 5 in the first quarter and 52 to 18 on the day.
The second quarter was
more of the same as the Wolverines were aided by two extra-man
opportunities and capitalized on both. Mans and Lombardi added
even-up goals, and Michigan led 7-0 at the half.
Starting goalie Dan
Webber (Weston, Mass./Weston) stayed in the goal for the
first five minutes of the second half and ended the day with 6 saves.
Jeremy Menkowitz (Ambler, Penn./Germantown Academy)
followed him and recorded 2 saves, and sophomore transfer Andy Mast
(Bonnockburn, Ill./Deerfield) played the final five minutes in
his first action of the season.
Michigan kept rolling in
the second half, scoring 5 in the third and 4 more in the final quarter.
Loyola managed their only goal of the day early in the fourth on a
man-up chance when Michigan was called for a pair of penalties that
resulted in a minute and a half non-releasable time in the box.
Michigan opens their CCLA
season next Saturday when they travel down to West Lafayette, Indiana to
take on Purdue at 1:00 p.m. CST.
NOTES
●
Bobby Groenke (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and Jaewon
Chung (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) are the only two Wolverines
who did not see action in the game. Both are injured.
●
With the loss of Kevin Toller for the year, the Wolverines had to find
someone to step up to fill the void at the faceoff X. That person
appears to be sophomore midfielder Trevor Broad (Grosse
Pointe, Mich./University Liggett). Broad was 7 and 1 today and
is now 33 and 19 on the season for an impressive .635 win percentage.
●
The Michigan extra-man unit got only three opportunities today, but
converted on two of those to bring its overall success rate up to 56.5%
on 13 of 23 chances. The man-down unit is keeping pace, holding
opponents so far this season to just 6 goals on 26 chances for a 23.1%
conversion rate.
●
Michigan had its best shooting day of the season. The Wolverines
put 37 of 52 shots on goal. The Lion goalie combination of Bruce
Brown and Dave Comb kept it closer than it could have been by making a
combined 21 saves.
●
The Wolverines leave the team hotel at 4:45 a.m. tomorrow morning for
their 6:40 flight back to Michigan.
QUOTES
UM Head Coach John Paul
On the
game overall: "We needed this. Loyola Marymount is a
pretty good team. We had to play well today, but most importantly
we had to be excited to play, and I think we did both. We aren't
happy with the overall results on this trip, but at least we're going
home with a good feeling fresh in our minds."
On the success of the offense today: "They played most of
the game in a soft zone that allowed us to hold the ball and pick our
spots. We have a new zone offense in this year, and as the game
went on we got it rolling a bit. It was good to see we can have
some success against a zone. We don't see a lot of them."
