Lombardi's Career High Ignites Win Over Oakland

Rochester Hills, Mich. -- Ray Lombardi (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) scored a career-high 7 points on 4 goals and 3 assists, leading Michigan to a 14-10 win over Oakland University today.  The Wolverines built a commanding 14-3 lead through three quarters, but then had to withstand a furious fourth quarter onslaught by the Grizzlies before killing the clock and earning the win.

Michigan completely dominated the first three quarters of play as they built an 11 goal lead.  To that point the Wolverines had outshot the Grizzles 39-16.  Michigan coach John Paul substituted liberally to start the fourth, and for the first three minutes the teams played evenly.  Nate Reynolds narrowed the gap to 10 at the 11:49 mark, and then the Grizzlies rattled off five more goals in less than two minutes before Paul got the starters back in and stopped the bleeding.  Billy Binge did most of the damage, scoring three of his four goals during the run, ending with Oakland's ninth goal with 7:45 to go.  Oakland was held scoreless for the next five minutes against Michigan's first-team defense, but with momentum on their side the Grizzlies maintained their pressure and managed to make the score 14-10 with 2:48 to go.  Trevor Broad (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Liggett) won the ensuing faceoff, his eighth win of the day, and the Wolverines were able to play keep-away in the Oakland box for the remainder of the game.

Binge got the home crowd into the game early, scoring the first goal just over two minutes in when he beat his man and the slide and stuck the ball into the bottom corner.  The Wolverines tied it up three minutes later when Jeff Hanna (Fayatteville, NY/Fayatteville-Manlius) scored the first of his three off a Lombardi feed.  Chip Thomas (Tenefly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) gave his team the lead with 7:11 to go on a drive and shot as the slide arrived a step too late.

Michigan outscored Oakland 5-0 in the second on the strength of two Hanna goals.  Lombardi scored one and assisted on two, including a feed to Broad with just two seconds to go before the half that gave the Wolverines all the momentum heading into halftime.

Oakland took the momentum away right off the opening second half faceoff.  Michigan won 7 of 9 first half faceoffs against Oakland's regular faceoff midfielders, so the Grizzlies brought Binge up from attack to see what he could do.  Using what looked like an illegal technique that involved grabbing Broad's stick, lifting it and then kicking the ball forward where his stick had been, he won the draw forward and set up a quick Oakland fast-break goal.  The Michigan coaches protested, but the goal stood.  The Wolverines went on another 5-0 run from that point, however, and when Oakland scored their third with 4:09 to go in the quarter, Lombardi answered with his third and fourth of the day.

Michigan faces another conference test on Wednesday when they travel to Mattawan High School to take on Western Michigan in a 7:30 p.m. game.

NOTES

Oakland is only the second team this season to score in double digits on the Wolverines.  The only other team to do it was Whittier, the #3 ranked team in Division III.  Oakland's fourth quarter seven goal run is the second longest goal streak against Michigan this year.  Whittier scored nine in a row at one point.

Michigan outshot the Grizzlies 39-16 in the first three quarters, but Oakland turned that around and outshot the Wolverines 15 - 7 in the fourth.

The win improved Michigan's CCLA win streak to 44 straight games, dating back to the 1998 season.  The Wolverines have won four straight CCLA championships during that stretch.  No current Wolverine has ever lost a conference game.

The Wolverines felt at home for much of the game because of the efforts of one Oakland student who has some Maize and Blue blood running through his veins.  Beginning in the first quarter and continuing throughout the game the familiar refrain of The Victors were played repeatedly from speakers propped in a dorm-room window across the street.  The anonymous fan also hung an M banner in the window for support.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the game overall: "Oakland is a good team.  We knew that coming in.  It's a recurring theme for us that we have to learn to approach every game the same way, but we still haven't learned to do that.  I thought we were emotionally flat today, and it showed in our (lack of) execution and in the fourth quarter when Oakland made their run."

On withstanding the Oakland run: "Everyone has to be ready to play when they get a chance.  We put in a lot of subs to start the fourth, and Oakland took advantage of that.  Once they got rolling, they got energized and confident.  It was like a completely different game.  To their credit, our starting defense came back in and pretty much shut them down, despite how energized they had become.  I was really pleased with the way we killed the last three minutes.  We had no intention of scoring, we just wanted to keep possession and kill the clock.  We practice that situation, and this time we ran it really well."

On the play of Ray Lombardi: "Ray was outstanding today.  He's always been really steady for us, but he shows of flashes of becoming a star.  Our attack are all small and quick.  If you don't have three really quick defensemen in there, we'll have a matchup we like somewhere.  Today Ray got that matchup and took full advantage."
