Wolverines Crush the
Hoosiers 22-2
Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Jeff Hanna (Fayatteville, NY/Fayatteville-Manlius)
scored a season-high four goals and added two assists, and Ben Herbst (Pikesville, MD/Pikesville)
scored three and dished out three assists to lead Michigan to a 22-2
drubbing of Indiana.
Justin Gal (Amherst, Mass./Milton Academy), Sloan
Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Chip Thomas
(Tenefly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) each had hat-tricks as well.
For the second straight
game the Michigan defense held an opponent to ten or fewer shots.
The Hoosiers could only manage nine tonight. Mike Roth (Montclair,
NJ/Montclair-Kimberly) stood out on defense with a number of strips
and interceptions, and longstick midfielder Dave Silverman (Potomac,
MD/Churchill) led the team in ground balls with six.
Defensive midfielder
Anthony Ragnone (Flint, Mich./Flint Powers), who also seemed
to be all over the field tonight, turned in the play of the game.
Five minutes into the second quarter, with Michigan already holding a
7-0 lead, Ragnone collected a ground ball in front of the UM goal,
dodged through traffic and carried into the offensive zone. With
the IU defense shutting off his outlets, Ragnone beat a double-team from
behind the goal, drove out front and turned and rifled one past Willy
Knight to put Michigan up 8-0.
The Wolverines scored
early and often, building a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Hanna
opened the scoring just over a minute into the game off a Herbst feed,
and three minutes later Herbst broke down the defense again and scored
himself. Thomas got the next two on a pair of drives from the top
less than a minute apart. Gal finished the first quarter scoring
when nobody on the Indiana man-down unit picked him up at the start of a
penalty, and he buried it just three seconds into Michigan's first
extra-man chance.
The Hoosiers finally got
on the board with 6:44 to go in the second quarter and Michigan holding
a commanding 9-0 lead. The goal came with Michigan a man-up, but
when the Wolverine defense misplayed a desperation clearing pass, a
streaking Jon Hatton collected it and went in unopposed, beating Dan
Webber (Weston, Mass./Weston) on the only shot on goal he
faced in the game. The Wolverines answered with two more and went
into halftime up 11-1.
Brian Ray (Bloomfield
Hills, Mich./Seaholm) scored his first career Michigan goal off a
Herbst feed a minute into the third. The goal got the Wolverines
started on a 9-0 quarter that ended with a Herbst extra-man tally with
eight seconds to go. Michigan outshot Indiana 13-1 in the period.
The Hoosiers opened up the
scoring in the fourth with a Jim Derrick goal at 13:16 to go, but Hanna
answered seventeen seconds later. Buchan-McGilliard finished the
scoring with 7:13 to play on Michigan's third extra-man goal in four
tries. The Wolverines killed the clock for the final few minutes
to secure the 20-goal final margin of victory.
Eight Michigan seniors
appeared in their final home game tonight, including Thomas, Herbst,
Buchan-McGilliard, Jason Gratson (Clinton Twp., Mich./DeLaSalle),
Brian Marchena (Troy, Mich./Country Day), Andy Vilardo (Rockville,
MD/Wootton) and Chris Sigakis (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins).
Senior goalie
Jeremy Menkowitz (Ambler, Penn./Germantown Academy) played
the entire second half and turned away one of the two shots on goal he
faced.
The Wolverines continue
their CCLA schedule at Buffalo on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
NOTES
●
While the Michigan defense was holding Indiana to just 9 shots, the
offense was busy taking 43 shots, 37 of them on goal.
Indiana goalie Willy Knight had 15 saves. Meanwhile, Michigan's
two goalies who played in the game only saw 3 shots on goal.
●
Justin Gal, who scored only his second goal of the season in Michigan's
last game against Illinois, broke out of his slump tonight with a
hat-trick.
The junior midfielder scored 26 goals last year.
●
The Wolverines won 23 of 27 faceoffs. Gal won 6 of 7, Ragnone won
all 7 of his draws, and Trevor Broad (Grosse Pointe,
Mich./University Liggett School) went 10-3.
●
The win was Michigan's 46th straight CCLA victory, dating back to the
1998 season. It was also Michigan's 31st win out of their last 32
home games, going back to 1999.
QUOTES
UM Head Coach John Paul
On the
game overall: "This was the first time all year we put together
a complete game on both ends of the field. We are dominating
defensively, which is the kind of team we want to be."
On
holding Indiana to nine shots: "That's an amazing statistic
against a team that does have the capability to score. The only
downside is that our goalies don't see a lot of shots in game
situations. That's a problem we don't mind having, but I do think
it's hard to stay sharp sometimes when you can't get into any kind of
rhythm."
On the play of the offense: "We've shot very poorly in many
of our games this year, so it's been a real point of emphasis in
practice recently. We shot very well tonight. It was great
to see Justin (Gal) get back on track tonight. We need him to
score."
