Wolverines Roll Past Central Florida in Season Opener

Orlando, Fla. – The University of Michigan men’s lacrosse team defeated the University of Central Florida Golden Knights 24-0 Monday evening in Orlando, Florida at the UCF Club Sports Field in sunny, 72 degree weather.  It was the first of three games U-M will play this week in the state of Florida.  Nine Wolverines had multi-point games including leading scorers junior Ryan Clark (Summit, N.J./Summit) who tallied one goal along with six assists for a total of seven points, senior captain Ray Lombardi (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) who notched 2-3-5 totals and freshman reserve attacker Joe Williamson (Romeo, Mich./Romeo) who tied the team high with three goals and added two assist for a five-point game and “game-ball” honors as presented by head coach John Paul.

In a game where Michigan’s reserves saw almost a full-half of play, the Wolverines dominated in every aspect, winning faceoffs 22-4, collecting 56 groundballs compared to UCF’s 19, and tallying 57 shots, while Michigan’s defense held the Golden Knights to only six shots.  Michigan also lead in clear-percentage with a .857 percentage (18-21) next to Central Florida’s .444% (11-25).  With the extra-man advantage the Wolverines were able to convert three out of their seven total chances while denying UCF on each of their three chances.

Senior captain Jeff Hanna (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manilus) tied the team-lead with three goals on the day, for 3-1-4 totals.  Freshman attacker Mark Idzenga (River Vale, N.J./Bergen Tech) contributed two goals along with one assist.

Amongst midfielders, senior midfielder Justin Gal (Amherst, Mass./Milton Academy), junior midfielder Trevor Broad (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett) and sophomore midfielder Jim Constantine (Troy, Mich./Seaholm) each tallied two goals, while sophomore midfielder Eric Rimmke (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) notched two assists.

Junior goaltender Dan Webber (Weston, Mass./Weston) played the first half and made two savse, freshman Ryan Kaufman (Olney, Md./Magruder) played the third quarter along with 6:55 of the fourth and recorded one save, while freshman Zach Mintz (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) finished the final 8:05 without seeing a shot on goal.

Michigan will play next vs. seventh-ranked Florida, on Wednesday (Feb. 25) in Gainesville at 7:00 p.m. on the UVS Field.

NOTES

●  Six freshman notched their first points as Wolverines in only their first game led by Joe Williamson’s five point (3-2-5) performance while both freshman goaltenders saw action.

●  Michigan used all 37 players on the roster today with the reserves seeing significant early-season action in most of the second half.

●  With the 24-0 victory, Michigan tied its third largest margin of victory ever.  The last time the Wolverines won by a +24 margin Michigan defeated Purdue on March 25, 2000 by a score of 25-1.

●  Ryan Clark notched a career high seven points in the contest with 1-6-7 totals.  Clark notched six points, twice, in his freshman campaign of 2002.

QUOTES

UM Head Coach John Paul

On the game overall: "I think we accomplished our goals.  We wanted to work hard out there no matter what the score was - outwork them the entire game.  I think we did that.  We didn’t score until six minutes in so maybe we came out a little nervous.  But once we got going, we got going.  We knew they had already played a game and this was our first so we knew if just kept going and outworked them we’d be fine.”

On the defense: "The defense really did a great job today.  They held them to only six shots, and only three on goal.  The defense did their job.

On being able to work the reserves: "It was great to get all that time for the reserves.  Getting them early-season action is important.  They may not be able to see that much time for the rest of the year and to get it now is important.  Its also the best they have played all year.”

On game plan: "Overall we wanted to stay within our system.  We wanted to work on the things we would use all year.  We could have improvised a little more and could have been more aggressive on defense but we just wanted to stick to the system and work it.  We also didn’t want to show off too much, this early in the season with the games vs. Florida and BYU coming up.”
