Three First Teamers Highlight UM's All-American Honorees

Ann Arbor, Mich. – One day after completing their season with their first-ever national semifinal appearance, the third ranked University of Michigan lacrosse team had five players named to the US Lacrosse Men's Division Intercollegiate Associates All-American Team.  Dan Webber (Weston, Mass./Weston), David Silverman (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Mike Roth (South Orange, NJ/Montclair Kimberly) were named to the First Team, and Kirk Kozel (Barrington, Ill/Taft, CT) and Trevor Broad (Grosse Pointe, Mich/University Liggett) were named to the Second Team.   In addition, Webber, Silverman, Roth and Broad were also honored as USL MDIA Academic All-Americans, an honor that goes to players who maintain a 3.2 GPA or better and are voted to their conference 1st or 2nd Team.

Webber, a senior goaltender, has been a three year starter for the Wolverines.  This year he improved his save percentage to .668, and allowed only 88 goals in 21 games.  As the anchor of one of the top defensive units in the USL MDIA, he gave up only 3.82 goals per game.  No team the Wolverines faced this year scored in double digits, and no MDIA team scored more than 7 goals.  From March 27 to April 30, a span of nine games, Michigan never relinquished more than four goals while Webber was in the net.  Webber was also honored as a First-Team All-CCLA goalie for 2005 and as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year.  He was honored by his teammates as the Michigan team's Defensive Most Valuable Player.  Webber will play this summer for the USA West team that is competing in the Asia Pacific Games in Osaka, Japan in June.  With a 3.8 GPA and a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Webber was also honored as a USL MDIA Academic All-American this year.

A senior longstick midfielder, Silverman set a single-season Michigan record with 159 ground balls.  He also scored seven goals and added four assists for eleven total points, an all-time high for a Michigan longstick.  He had three multi-point games, including a career-high three point game against Miami on April 9.  Silverman was a First-Team All-CCLA selection, and with a 3.5 GPA in Political Science, he earned USL MDIA Academic All-American honors as well.  Silverman was voted the team's Robert DiGiovanni Most Valuable Player for 2005.  He will also compete for the USA West team this summer in Japan, joining teammates Webber, Kozel, Ryan Clark (Summit, NJ/Summit) and Peter Krauss (Forest Hills, Mich/Forest Hills) and Michigan coach John Paul, who is on the coaching staff.

Roth, a senior defenseman, finished fifth on the team in ground balls with 52.  A four-year starter, Roth was also honored as a First-Team All-CCLA performer for the third straight year.  This is his second time on the All-American list, as he was honored on the Third Team last year.  His 3.75 GPA in Honors History also earned him a selection as a USL MDIA Academic All-American.

Kozel, also a senior defenseman, was third on the team in ground balls with 75.  A 2nd Team All-CCLA honoree, Kozel has been a four year starter along with Roth.  He has also been on the All-CCLA team for all four years.  This is his third year as a USL MDIA All-American, after appearing on the Second Team in 2003 and the Third Team in 2004.  He is also joining the USA West team this summer in Japan.

Broad, a senior faceoff specialist, is making his first appearance on a USL MDIA All-American team.  He was also recognized as a Second Team All-CCLA honoree, and he took home the Michigan Unsung Hero Award for 2005, as voted by his teammates.  Broad finished the season with a .638 faceoff win percentage on 125 wins in 220 draws.  He was also honored as a USL MDIA Academic All-American for the second straight year, after finishing with a 3.9 GPA in Honors History and Political Science.  He will attend Law School at Michigan.

Michigan's five All-Americans match last year's total, although 2004 was the first time the Wolverines did not have a player appear on the First Team.  In total, Michigan has had 30 USL MDIA All-Americans since 2000.  This is the third time in that period, including 2000 and 2001, that Michigan has had three players named to the First Team.  Greg Deutch ('01), Jeff Hadwin ('01) and David DiCamillo ('02) are the only Wolverines to receive First Team honors in multiple years.
