Ann Arbor, Mich. - The University of Michigan Men's Lacrosse team
has announced the captains for the 2007-2008 season. Four seniors,
midfielders Mark Hammitt (Madison, N.J./Delbarton – Boston
College), Brekan Kohlitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Notre
Dame Harper Woods), Bobby Morales (Bloomfield Hills,
Mich./Brother Rice) and goaltender Graham Townsend
(Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) will lead the squad in the
upcoming campaign.
Hammitt enters his third season
with the Wolverines after playing at Boston College during his freshman
year. Hammitt notched 26 goals and 13 assists last season, finishing
fourth on the team in total points while earning 1st Team
All-CCLA honors and Academic All-American honors. He also played
on the USA West team over the summer that won the Berlin Open and was
runners-up in the Prague Cup.
Kohlitz, the Wolverines' top
faceoff man, posted 168 wins and just 62 losses at the "X" last season
for a .730 win percentage. Starting 16 games for the Maize and Blue,
Kohlitz was named a 1st Team All-CCLA member in '07 and was
also a 3rd-Team All-American. He joined Hammitt on the USA West
squad over the summer and earned tournament MVP honors at the Berlin
Open.
Switching roles from offensive
minded midfielder to defensive middie, Morales enters his final campaign
as a repeat captain, having been awarded the honor late last season when
Matt Hudson was lost to a season-ending injury. Morales posted 19 goals
and 11 assists last season, while earning a spot on the CCLA's
All-Conference 1st Team.
Entering his first season as the
main man guarding the cage, Graham Townsend rounds out the group.
Townsend started two games last season and saw action in 12, posting a
7.40 goals against average, and a .635 save percentage.
Said head coach John Paul,
"There is no greater honor, or responsibility, in team sports than being
elected captain by your teammates. I'm confident these four have
the passion, integrity and compassion it takes."
Michigan will open their fall
scrimmage season on October 12 when they take on NCAA National Champion
Johns Hopkins and Army at 6:00pm in Ann Arbor at Elbel Field in the
Wolverine Fall Showcase.
