Game Summary

Wolverines Roll in Season Opener

2/19/00 – The 7th ranked Michigan lacrosse team dominated every aspect of the game on their way to a 25-3 season-opening victory over Indiana (1-2). As usual, the attack unit of Tom Burns (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice HS), Adam Denenberg (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion HS) and Jeff Hadwin (Vestal, NY/Vestal HS), who is just back from a year off, led the way with half of the Michigan goals. Unlike many games last year, however, when the Wolverines had to depend on the attack to carry them, this was a total team effort.

Michigan used a swarming team defense and a match-up zone to shut down the potent attack trio of Jeff Robertson, Jon Ganey and David Lord, holding them to just 1 point. Defenseman Dave DiCamillo (Port Washington, NY/Screiber HS) was all over the field for the Wolverines, while goalies Josh Charm (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) and Kirt Marsh (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS) recorded 13 saves between them. Michigan outshot the Hoosiers 58 to 17 and won 21 of 30 faceoffs, with Kevin Keenan (Bloomfield, MI/Seaholm HS) controlling 16 and only losing 6.

Junior midfielder Dave Bernard (Litchfield, CT/Westminster HS) opened up the scoring just 34 seconds into the game with a quick shot from 8 yards out. The Wolverines kept the pressure on as Denenberg and Hadwin both hit several pipes before Burns put Michigan up 2-0 with a shot on the crease at 10:35. Denenberg found the net 4 minutes later, then Dan Jerneycic (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Univ. of Detroit HS) started a run of 3 goals in under a minute that was capped off by a beautiful move and shot by Ross Tucker (Simsbury, CT/Grapevine HS). Denenberg closed the 1st quarter scoring with just 11 seconds to go on a face-dodge and deadly accurate shot that hit two pipes on its way in.

Indiana got on the board the first in the 2nd with a man-up goal from Bergren to end their drought, but Michigan rattled off the next 5, including 3 in a 33 second span, before the Hoosiers could answer again. The last minute was more of the same as Michigan scored the final 3 goals of the half in a 35 second span to go into the break with a commanding 15-2 lead.

The 2nd half gave the Wolverines the opportunity to clear the bench, but the results were the same as they outscored the Hoosiers 10-1. Freshmen Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS), Chip Thomas (Tenefly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood HS) and Ben Herbst (Pikesville, MD/Pikesville HS) all recorded the first goals of their careers, with Herbst scoring two and Buchan McGilliard adding two assists.

Hadwin led all scorers with 7 goals and 1 assist, while Denenberg chipped in 3 goals and 3 assists and Burns went 2 and 3. Jerneycic led all midfielders with 3 goals. Michigan hosts defending NCLL national champion Penn State tomorrow at noon.
