Michigan Ends Regular Season with Victory Over MSU

4/21/00 –The 6th ranked (USLIA) Michigan men’s lacrosse team closed out the 2000 regular season with a one-sided 15-5 trouncing of CCLA rival Michigan State Friday night at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.  Seniors Dan Jerneycic (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Univ. of Detroit Jesuit HS), Pierce Davis (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley HS), Alex Gregor (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Country Day HS), Ross Tucker (Simsbury, CT/Grapevine HS) and Tom Willis (Milford, MI/Univ. of Detroit Jesuit HS) all played in their final home games as Wolverines.  Senior goalie Josh Charm (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) sat this game out.

The Wolverines did not dress 4 starters, including Charm, and several other players who were resting injuries.  Without leading scorer Adam Denenberg (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion HS) the attack had to depend on Brian Fischer (Novi, MI/Novi HS) and Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS) who split time at his position.  Both players contributed a goal to the Michigan effort and Buchan-McGilliard added two assists.  Jeff Hadwin (Vestal, NY/Vestal HS) led all scorers with 5 goals.

Michigan took a 2-0 lead with a couple of early Hadwin goals before the Spartans could answer with one of their own.  Michigan State shifted into a packed-in zone after that, which slowed the Wolverines down for a short time before they rattled off 3 goals in under a minute at the end of the 1st quarter.  The zone kept Michigan from getting easy looks at the goal from in tight, but it also served to allow the Wolverines to kill time as they moved the ball around the perimeter.

Hadwin got the Wolverines going quickly in the 2nd with a goal just 29 seconds in, but it would be nearly 10 minutes before they could put one in again.  Unfortunately for Michigan State, they were not faring any better on the other end, and it was Michigan that the scoring started again as they ripped off 3 goals in 37 seconds to close out the 1st half scoring.

With a 9-1 lead after the 1st half Michigan head coach John Paul began substituting freely and his offense began killing clock.  The Wolverines were still able to keep steady pressure on the Spartan end, as they scored 5 more goals in the 3rd to go up 14-1.  State finally answered with their first goal in over 36 minutes with just 5 ticks left on the clock in quarter.  Both teams traded even-up goals in the 4th and State added two extra-man goals to make the final 15-5.  Michigan goalie Kirt Marsh (Tacoma, WA/Curtis HS), playing in place of Charm, only had to make 5 saves on the night, while Spartan goalie James Gervasi totalled 11.  Jon Edgerly led the Spartans with 3 goals.

Michigan heads to Milwaukee this weekend for the CCLA tournament, where they will be the 1st seed out of the East Division.  The winner of the tournament gets the automatic conference bid to the USLIA national championship tournament in St. Louis May 10-13.  The Wolverines are the defending CCLA champions.
