ANN ARBOR, Mich. The University of Michigan mens lacrosse team
finished their fall scrimmage season Saturday night with a 14-4 victory over Michigan
State in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. In front of a good-sized crowd, the Wolverines were able
to overcome a sloppy first half and blow the game open with a 7-0 run in the 3rd
quarter. As usual, the attack paced the scoring for Michigan with senior creaseman Jeff
Hadwin (Vestal, NY/Vestal HS) scoring 6
goals and sophomore Adam Denenberg (Wynnewood,
PA/Lower Merion HS) adding 4 goals and 3 assists. Junior attack Tom Burns
(Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice HS) chipped
in with 1 goal and 2 assists, and freshman Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS) added a goal. Only 2 of the
teams 14 goals were scored from the midfield, both coming from senior Pierce
Davis (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley HS).
Midfielders Dave Bernard (Litchfield, CT/Westminster
HS) and Howie Fugate (Punxsutawney,
PA/Lincoln-Sudbury HS) each added an assist.

With the win, the team concluded an undefeated fall season, but head coach John Paul
says there is still a ways to go if the team is going to achieve the goals theyve
set for themselves this year. "We are missing a few key guys this fall due to
injuries and academics, so were not quite in sync at this point," said Paul,
"but I expected us to be farther along by now. We made a lot of mental
mistakes." The lopsided score did allow Paul to play everyone as he prepares to cut
the team down to its final spring roster in two weeks.
The Wolverines continue with practice and conditioning through early December, then
pick up practice when classes resume in January. The regular season begins February 19
when Indiana visits Ann Arbor. Michigan returns every player from last years squad
that finished ranked 4th nationally, so expectations are high. "This team
is really focused on the spring," said Paul. "Well be playing by far the
toughest schedule weve ever faced, so well need to improve every week."
