Michigan Demolishes Oakland 25-3

3/14/00 – The University of Michigan men’s lacrosse team improved their CCLA record to 2-0 with an impressive 25-3 win over Oakland University tonight in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. The 8th ranked (USLIA) Wolverines are 5-3 overall.

Michigan was concerned about coming out flat in a game they knew they should win, and they were right to be worried as Oakland got on the board first with a Towbey Kassa man-up goal 2:24 into the game. The goal seemed to wake up the sluggish Wolverines, and they went on to score 11 straight before the Grizzlies could answer 2:41 into the 2nd quarter. Michigan senior attackman Jeff Hadwin (Vestal, NY/ Vestal HS) did all of his damage in the 1st as he scored 5 and assisted on 1.

Kassa completed the Oakland scoring with his second of the game with 2:37 to go in the 2nd quarter, but by halftime the score was 18-3 and Michigan head coach John Paul had started to empty his bench. The Wolverines outshot the Grizzlies 39-11 in the first half, as Oakland had trouble clearing the ball against the Michigan zone ride, and couldn’t free themselves up on offense against a swarming zone defense. Junior longstick Brady Kim (Columbia, MD/ Columbia HS) had an especially good game as he continually showed up around the ball and several times ran it through much of the Oakland ride. Michigan’s first-team man-up unit, which had not been performing as well as expected thus far in the season, went 4 for 5 during the first two quarters.

In the second half Michigan was able to substitute freely, and several freshmen took advantage of the opportunity to play. Chip Thomas (Tenefly, NJ/Dwight-Englewood HS) scored 4 goals, while Sloan Buchan-McGilliard (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS) controlled the offense as the Wolverines slowed things down. Freshman goalie Jeremy Menkowitz (Fort Washington, PA/Germantown Academy) was outstanding in goal as he recorded 10 saves in the first action of his Michigan career.

The Wolverines travel to Columbia, Missouri this weekend to take on Kansas State and Mizzou. Their next home game is Saturday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. against Purdue.
