1. Why should I attend a Michigan lacrosse camp? Aside from the All-American Combine in the winter, all Michigan lacrosse camps are pure teaching camps. We pride ourselves in the level of our curriculum and our commitment to make every camper a better lacrosse player. Many camps market themselves as teaching camps, then spend most of their time playing games and doing non-lacrosse activities (movie night? swimming?). We are all lacrosse, all the time. If you want to work hard and improve your game, then these are the camps for you.
Our staff is selected for their ability to teach and their passion for the game. We purposefully avoid hiring a lot of big-name players and coaches. This is not an autograph session, it's a serious learning opportunity.
We get an overwhelmingly positive response to all of our camps and clinics. We draw campers from across the country and Canada, not just from Michigan, and many of our campers repeat.
Of course, if you are interested in playing for Michigan someday, the Michigan camps are the best way to be seen by the coaching and to get a feel for what it would be like to attend and play here.
2. What level or age of player are the camps best suited for? Most of our camps are structured for any age and ability level, however two of them are meant for specific players.
The summer Advanced Technique Camp is meant for high school varsity level players. Prospective campers should already have a very solid foundation of skills. The curriculum is meant to build on those skills. We will spend some time the first day or so refining basic skills as needed, but this is a not a camp for players who are new to the game or not yet confident enough to play at the varsity level. If you are not yet a varsity player at your high school, and you are very confident playing with mostly high school juniors and seniors, you are probably qualified as well.
The winter All-American Combine is for high school juniors and seniors (and a few select sophomores) who are looking for college recruitment opportunities. In order to register, the combine must first receive a recommendation from their high school coach. This is for elite level players only.
3. What is a typical day like? Winter programs are all just one day, so go to the website of the clinic that interests you for details.
Summer camps typically include three full sessions of lacrosse, including a morning session that focuses on individual techniques, an afternoon session that teaches more team concepts and an evening session that involves games in order to utilize what you've learned.
4. Is there medical coverage at camp? A certified trainer is present at all sessions of every Michigan lacrosse camp and clinic. For summer camps a trainer will also reside in the residence hall in order to provide emergency care to overnight campers if needed. In addition, all summer camps are held at Mitchell Fields, which is less than a half-mile from the University of Michigan Hospital complex.
If your son has special medical needs, make sure they are indicated on his medical form, and let the camp trainer know about them at check-in.
There are several ways to contact the camp during sessions:
Bursley Hall front desk (summer camps only): 734-763-1140 Michigan lacrosse office: 734-622-9942
Mail for the camp: Michigan Lacrosse Camps 1000 S. State St. Ann Arbor, MI 48109
Mail for summer campers at the dorm: Michigan Lacrosse Camp, attn camper: camper's name Bursley Hall 1931 Duffield St. Ann Arbor, MI 48109
In addition, your confirmation packet will contain the email addresses and cell phone numbers for the camp director.
Yes, there are discounts for early registration and, in some cases, for signing up for more than one camp. Check the Financial Info link for the specific camp you are interested in attending for details.
7. What
if I have to cancel? After the cancellation date, refunds (minus the $50 administrative fee) can only be given for certified medical reasons. Certification must be in the form of a signed medical statement from a physician, and it must be received before the day camp begins or no refund can be given. Campers who have to leave camp early for medical reasons will receive a pro-rated refund, minus non-waivable camp costs. Campers who are asked to leave camp for disciplinary reasons will not receive any refund.
8. When will I receive confirmation? Upon completion of your online registration, you will receive an immediate confirmation email. All details you need to know (check-in, check-out, travel info, maps, documents that must be filled out, etc.) can be found through the camp website.
9. What are the check-in and check-out times? Check the Travel link on the web page for your specific camp for details. Details are also in your confirmation packet.
Absolutely! All sessions of all camps and clinics are open to parents. Many parents come for the evening games at the Advanced Technique Camp. Bring a folding chair and enjoy.
11. If I am flying, which airport should I use? The closest airport is Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). It is about a 30 minute drive from camp to the airport.
12. Is there train service to Ann Arbor? Yes. There is Amtrak service. Many of our campers coming from the Chicago area use the train.
13. How can I get from the airport or train station to camp? For winter clinics, you will have to arrange your own transportation.
For summer camps, if you are arriving by air, you will have to arrange to get yourself to and from camp. We recommend Custom Transit. They offer group discounts if you combine your transfer with other campers. If you don't know of other campers attending, check with the lacrosse office to see if others are coming around the same time you are. We will put you in touch.
For summer camps, if you are arriving by train let us know which train you are taking, and we will pick you up at the Ann Arbor station. It is just about five minutes from the camp.
14. What if I have to arrive early or late? If you must arrive early, you won't be able to check-in until check-in officially starts. Take a look at the Travel section of your specific camp for details.
If you must arrive late, let the camp director know ahead of time so we can make arrangements to check you in when you arrive. There are no discounts for missed sessions due to late arrival.
15. What if I have to check-out early or late? If you must leave early, make sure the camp director knows before the start of camp so he can make arrangements to check you out.
There is no late check-out. If your transportation is scheduled to arrive after check-out has ended, you will have to wait on your own for it to get there. We cannot guarantee camp staff will be there past the scheduled check-out time. If you are a summer camper, the dormitory staff will be present.
16. What if I have to miss a session? Your parents should let the camp director know ahead of time so you are not missed during roll call.
17. What happens if a session is cancelled? It is possible that a session could be cancelled due to severe weather or enough rain to make the fields unplayable. This has only happened once in the history of our camps, but it is always a possibility. If a session is cancelled, we will make every effort to fill in with suitable indoor activities. We would love to have backup fields available, but if weather is forcing us to cancel chances are that fields everywhere nearby are also affected. We cannot issue refunds for sessions that are cancelled for reasons beyond our control.
18. Will there be apparel and equipment available at camp? We have a fully stocked camp store at all summer camps that includes lacrosse apparel and equipment. We do not have a store at the winter clinics.
19. Where do overnight campers reside? All overnight campers stay at Bursley Residence Hall on Michigan's North Campus in Ann Arbor. The common areas at Bursley Hall were recently renovated. It is a short walk to Mitchell Fields, where all summer sessions take place. While the common areas at Bursley are air conditioned, the rooms are not. Bring a fan.
20. Will I get the roommate I request? We make effort to match you with the roommate request. If you do not get the roommate you request, there could be several reasons:
If you do not get the roommate you requested we make every effort to place you in a nearby room with a roommate of the same age. Changes can be made at check-in if all involved campers agree to them. Overnight campers are required to sleep in their assigned room for camp security reasons.
21. What fields does the camp use? Summer camps use Mitchell Fields, a large field complex between Central Campus and North Campus. We use Mitchell Fields, rather than some of the Athletic Campus fields, because it is the only field complex at Michigan that allows the number of fields we require in one place (Michigan's men's soccer camps use them for the same reason), and because the proximity to the dorm is better.
Winter Clinics are all held in Oosterbaan Fieldhouse, the home of Michigan Lacrosse.
22. Are there any activities outside of lacrosse sessions? All of our activities are lacrosse related. We do not waste time with outside activities like movie night or swimming sessions. In the evenings at our summer camps we do offer optional classroom sessions on topics like stick stringing, college recruiting and film review.
23. When and where do summer commuters check-in and check-out? Commuters must check-in for every session at the scheduled roll-call at Bursley Hall and walk down to the fields with the rest of the camp. They cannot leave the camp until the last session has ended each day. After the final session they can be picked up at Mitchell Fields, or they can stay for the optional evening classroom session and be picked up from the dorm.
24. Are there any times the campers are not supervised? No. As long as campers are not sneaking away (which is cause for removal from camp), camp staff is always present in the dorm and on the field.
25. What is the difference between the Nike Camp and other Michigan lacrosse camps? The Nike Camp is a general teaching camp much like the Advanced Technique Camp, but it is intended for all levels of player - from young beginners to high school players. It is administered by USSportsCamps (you use their website for registration). The camp is held at Adrian College, about 45 minutes from Ann Arbor.
The Nike Camp is staffed by Michigan coaches and players, along with other select college players. Like all Michigan camps, the curriculum is developed and run by the Michigan staff.
26. Can I sign up for the Team Camp as an individual camper? No. The Team Camp is intended for full teams only.
27. Is the Team Camp open to summer club teams? No. The Team Camp is intended only for high school varsity teams and their coaching staff. The purpose of the camp is to help varsity teams improve their approach to practice and games.
28. How do I access my account to change my information or register for another session?
You only need to set up
your account once. Each Michigan camp page has a link that looks
like this:
If you have already registered for any Michigan camp in the past, click that link to log on to your account.
29. Do I have to bring a signed medical form and physical? Yes. All required forms must be brought to check-in. They are available through the Camp Documents link on your specific camp webpage or in your confirmation packet. Do not mail the forms ahead of time. Bring them with you.
If you cannot have a physician sign the medical form in time you may substitute a copy of a physician conducted spots examination that had been completed in the current academic year. All of the rest of the medical form must be completed.
30. What are the individual sessions like at the Advanced Technique Camp? The individual sessions are one of the things that make the Advanced Technique Camp unique. Every camper gets a 15 minute session with one of the counselors for one-on-one instruction in whatever area of the game he desires. The topic is completely up to the camper.
31. Do you offer a position camp for midfielders? Not yet. Possibly in the future. Midfielders who are looking for pure offensive skill instruction will be well served by the Attack Camp. Of course, the Advanced Technique Camp provides quite a bit of instruction geared specifically toward midfielders.
32. Do you offer any camps for girls or specifically for youth players? No and no. Check the Michigan Summer Camps link at www.mgoblue.com for information on the Michigan Women's Lacrosse summer camp. Youth players are welcome at our Nike Camp and at our position camps, but we do not provide a camp specifically for youth players.
33. Is Coach Paul at every camp? Yes, but not at every session. Every Michigan camp has a camp director who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the camp. The position camps are run by those position coaches at Michigan (Goalie = Brad Gigliotti, Attack = Ken Broschart, Defense = Scott Morrison). The Nike Camp is co-directed by Coach Paul and Coach Morrison. The All-American Combine is run by Ed Chima of All-American Lacrosse. Coach Paul personally runs the Advanced Technique Camp, the Team Camp, the Winter Player Clinic and the Winter Coaching Clinic.
