Paul Honored as MCLA Coach of the Year

6/19/08 -- Michigan head coach John Paul was honored as the 2008 MCLA Division 1 Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.  Paul's 2008 Wolverines were the first MCLA team to complete a season undefeated, as they went 20-0 and captured their first national title.

 

Kohlitz First MCLA Player Drafted by MLL

5/28/08 -- Michigan senior captain Brekan Kohlitz (left) became the first non-varsity college player ever drafted by a Major League Lacrosse team when he was selected in the fifth round by the Washington Bayhawks.  Kohlitz, a faceoff specialist, won over 70% of his faceoffs this year.  He also led the team with 144 ground balls and scored four goals and had four assists.  He tied a career high with 21 faceoff wins in Michigan's national championship win over Chapman, and he also set a new career high with 29 draws taken in the game.

 

Culmination!  Michigan Tops Chapman for First Championship

5/17/08 -- Brekan Kohlitz won 21 of 29 faceoffs and Peter Vasher scored 3 goals to lead Michigan to their first MCLA national championship by beating Chapman 14-11 in the title game at Texas Stadium.  The Wolverines finished the season a perfect 20-0, making them the first MCLA team to finish a season undefeated.  Chapman tied the title game at 7 late in the third quarter, but Michigan scored the next five, capped by a Kohlitz blast right off a faceoff win, to take a commanding 12-7 lead with 12:27 to play.

 

Michigan Rides Over BYU into Final

5/16/08 -- Michigan held BYU to 50% on their clear, and that made the difference as the Wolverines built an early lead that they never relinquished, topping the Cougars 11-7 in the MCLA semifinals.  They will face Chapman tomorrow in the championship game.

 

Wolverines Outlast Georgia 10-8, Advance to Semis

5/14/08 -- Trailing 8-7 late in the fourth quarter to ninth seed Georgia, the Wolverines got a game-tying goal from faceoff specialist Brekan Kohlitz (left) and then took the lead on a trick man-up play to go ahead for good.  Peter Krauss, who led all UM scorers with 2 goals and 2 assists, assisted on the game winning goal and then scored an insurance goal as Georgia was trying to double-team to get the ball back in the final two minutes.  The Wolverines face #4 Brigham Young in the second semifinal game, this Friday at 8:00 p.m. in Texas Stadium. 

 

Yealy Leads Michigan to Quarters

5/13/08 -- Freshman attackman Trevor Yealy came one short of tying former Wolverine Jeff Hadwin for the MCLA record of 9 goals in a tournament game as he scored 8 to lead Michigan to a dominating 18-5 win over Lindenwood in the first round.

 

Michigan Earns #1 Seed in MCLA Tournament

5/5/08 -- One day after defeating Michigan State for their 8th CCLA championship, the Wolverines found out they would be the #1 seed at the 2008 MCLA Tournament.  Their first opponent will be #16 Lindenwood, a team they beat 20-5 at home on April 4.

 

Michigan Crushes Michigan State for CCLA Championship

5/4/08 -- The undefeated Wolverines used a 9-1 first quarter to jump-start a dominating 21-5 victory over Michigan State in the CCLA Championship Game.  Trevor Yealy and Riley Kearns had 5 goals each, and Kevin Zorovich had 2 goals and 6 assists.  Kearns (left), was also named the tournament's most valuable player.  The Wolverines outshot the Spartans 50 to 21 and went 6 for 8 on the extra-man.  Michigan now waits until Monday at 4:00 p.m. EST to find out if they will be the first seed in the MCLA tournament and who their first round opponent will be.

 

Wolverines Cruise Past Panthers, Advance to CCLA Finals

5/3/08 -- #1 Michigan moved one step away from their eighth CCLA championship with a dominating 24-3 win over Pittsburgh.  Peter Krauss led the way with 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists, and Trevor Yealy and Wes McGowan each added 4 goals.

 

Kohlitz, Townsend Named Co-MVP's at Banquet

4/24/08 -- For the first time ever, two players were honored as Co-MVP's of the Michigan men's lacrosse team as both Brekan Kohlitz (left) and Graham Townsend took home the Robert DiGiovanni Most Valuable Player Award at the annual Awards Banquet.  Kohlitz is the first faceoff specialist to win the award, while Townend's win marks the fourth time a Michigan goalie has been honored.  Ryan Kaufman won the award last year, and Sooman Kim won it at goalie twice, in 2001 and 2002, making him the only multiple-year winner.

 

Wolverines Dominate Conference Honors

4/23/08 -- Michigan head coach John Paul (left), who led the Wolverines to their tenth straight undefeated CCLA regular season, won the CCLA Division 1 Coach of the Year Award.  This marks the first time he has been honored with the award.  Joining Paul as honorees were junior defenseman Zach Elyachar who was named the CCLA Defensive Player of the Year and freshman attackman Trevor Yealy who was named the CCLA Offensive Player of the Year.  Sixteen Wolverines were named to the 1st, 2nd or 3rd All-CCLA teams.

 

Wolverines Top Spartans To Finish Perfect Regular Season

4/19/08 -- #1 Michigan improved to 14-0 by beating #24 Michigan State 13-5 in front of 3507 fans at Forest Hills Eastern High School.  Trevor Yealy (left) scored 5 goals to help get the Wolverines going after a 4-3 first half.  The Michigan ride was the biggest difference in the game, holding the Spartans to only 9 clears on 26 attempts.  The Wolverines outshot Michigan State 63-33 on the night.  The win secures the #1 seed in the CCLA Tournament for the tenth straight year and improves Michigan's all-time conference record to 83-2.

 

Michigan Rolls Over Western Michigan

4/16/08 -- The #1 Wolverines built a 13-1 halftime lead and coasted to a 20-2 win over Western Michigan at Pioneer High School.  The win improved the Wolverines to 13-0 with only one regular season game to play.

 

Vasher Rescues Michigan in OT Win Over CSU

4/12/08 -- Peter Vasher (left) scored his third goal of the game with 3:25 left in the second overtime to beat #7 Colorado State 10-9 and keep Michigan's perfect season alive.  The Rams scored the last four goals in regulation, including the tying goal with 26 seconds left to send it into overtime.  The win was the first for the Wolverines against Colorado State away from Ann Arbor, and it improves Michigan's record to a perfect 12-0 and secures their #1 ranking heading into the final two regular season games.

 

Western Michigan Game Moved to Pioneer High School

4/11/08 -- Michigan's CCLA game against Western Michigan, originally scheduled for March 22 in Kalamazoo, but postponed due to a snowstorm, has been moved to Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor.  The game will be played Wednesday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.

 

Townsend Shuts Down the Buffalos

4/10/08 -- Graham Townsend (left) had a career-high 28 saves to lead the Wolverine defense to their third shutout of the season in Michigan's 8-0 win over #16 Colorado.  A morning snow storm threatened the game, but the cold weather did not slow down freshman Trevor Yealy, as he scored 3 goals to lead the Maize and Blue.  Sophomore Kevin Zorovich added 5 assists.  Michigan has a practice day tomorrow in Boulder before their showdown with #7 Colorado State in Fort Collins on Saturday night.  CSU will be Michigan's 7th ranked opponent this season.

 

Wolverines Ground Eagles with Spread Attack

4/6/08 -- Andrew Fowler got his first start of the season, and all three freshman goalies played in Michigan's 24-4 victory over Eastern Michigan.  The Wolverines came out sluggishly, holding only a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.  They turned it up from there, scoring the next 19 goals before the Eagles scored again late in the fourth.  Brekan Kohlitz (left) won 12 of 13 faceoffs.  Josh Ein scored a career-high 7 goals, and a total of 16 Wolverines recorded points in the game.  Michigan outshot Eastern 62-12.

 

First Quarter Barrage Lifts Michigan Over Lindenwood

4/4/08 -- The #1 Wolverines came out hot against #14 Lindenwood, putting up nine goals in the first quarter while holding the Lions scoreless.  Trevor Yealy scored three of his game-high four, and Mark Hammitt (left) got back on track with two in the period and three in the game.  Michigan allowed only two Lindenwood goals in the first two quarters, building a commanding 13-2 halftime lead, then scored the next six to put the game away in the second half.  The Wolverines improve to 9-0 on the season.

 

Wolverines Keep Rolling with Blowout Win Over Illinois

3/28/08 -- #1 Michigan allowed their first goal in three weeks when Illinois scored in the second quarter, but the Wolverines only allowed one more while the offense had another stellar day in a 19-2 win.  The victory improved Michigan's record to 8-0 on the season.  Trevor Yealy led all scorers with 5 goals, and Wes McGowan (left) scored a career-high 4 goals to pace the Wolverines.  Michigan will now prepare for their final home game of the season next Friday, April 4, against the 14th ranked Lindenwood Lions.

 

Western Michigan Game Postponed Due to Snow

3/21/08 -- Michigan's third CCLA game, against Western Michigan, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, in Kalamazoo, has been postponed because a severe spring snowstorm.  The game will be played in Kalamazoo on April 16.

 

Michigan Crushes Oakland in Second Straight Shutout

3/21/08 -- The Wolverines had 19 players record points, and freshman goalies Mark Stone and Ben Scherr (left) split the game for their first action of the season, in Michigan's 28-0 victory over Oakland University.  The win improved the Wolverines to 2-0 in the CCLA and 7-0 overall, and it was their second straight shutout victory.  Michigan outshot the Grizzlies 43 - 5 in the first half en route to an 18-0 halftime lead.  256 were in attendance despite a severe spring snowstorm blowing outside the building.

 

Michigan Blanks Central 13-0

3/14/08 -- Freshman goalie Andrew Fowler made six second half saves, and fellow freshman attackman Trevor Yealy scored four goals to lead Michigan to their first shutout victory since 2005.

 

Wolverines Grab Top Spot in Latest MCLA Poll

3/12/08 -- Michigan was named the #1 team in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association when the third Lax World MCLA Division I Top-25 Poll of the year was announced this morning.  Michigan earned 28 of 40 first-place votes, and jumped six spots.

 

Wolverines Collar the Bulldogs, Improve to 5-0

3/8/08 -- Peter Vasher scored the first two goals of the game, and one more in the second quarter, to lead the Wolverines to a 12-9 win over #3 Minnesota-Duluth.  It was Michigan's fourth straight road win over a ranked team.

 

UCLA Game Cancelled

3/5/08 -- Michigan's scheduled home game on March 29 against UCLA has been cancelled by the Bruins.  The game will be recorded as a No Contest.  The game was to have been part of Michigan's 2008 Spring Alumni Weekend.

 

Third Quarter Surge Propels Wolverines Past BYU

3/1/08 -- In a game that was tied 6-6 at the half, Michigan used a 5-2 third quarter to pull away to beat #1 Brigham Young 12-9.  Brekan Kohlitz continued his faceoff domination, winning 21 of 25, and freshman Trevor Yealy (left) scored 4 goals to lead the Wolverines.  Michigan outshot the Cougars 53 - 38 and collected 71 ground balls.  The win was the first for Michigan in Provo, and it completed a perfect 3-0 spring trip through Arizona and Utah.  The Wolverines are now 4-0 on the season and will next face off against #3 Minnesota-Duluth.

 

Kohlitz is Named CollegeLax MCLA Player of the Week

2/29/08 -- Fresh off his dominating performances against Arizona State and Arizona this week, senior faceoff specialist Brekan Kohlitz (left) has been named the CollegeLax MCLA Player of the Week.  Kohlitz won a career high 20 faceoffs in Michigan's upset win over the 6th ranked Sun Devils, and he also contributed a goal and an assist in his first career multi-point game.  He followed that up on Wednesday with an 11 of 16 performance against #15 Arizona in Tucson.  Kohlitz is Michigan's first national player of the week award winner.

 

Townsend Frustrates the Cats

2/27/08 -- Graham Townsend had 17 saves, including 6 in the fourth quarter, to hold #15 Arizona to only 4 goals in a 9-4 Michigan win.  The Wolverines only took 4 shots in the fourth quarter, but they scored on all four to pull away.

 

Kohlitz, Ein Scorch the Sun Devils

2/24/08 -- Brekan Kohlitz won 20 of 23 faceoffs and scored the first goal of the game just seven seconds in to jump start #8 Michigan to an 11-8 win over #6 Arizona State.  Josh Ein (left) sparked the Wolverines by scoring a career high 3 goals, all in the third quarter, to help Michigan regain the lead and start to pull away.  The contest was the first for the Wolverines against an MCLA opponent since last May, after scrimmaging four NCAA Division 1 teams and scrimmaging and playing four Division 3 teams since September. 

 

Michigan Strong Out of the Gates Against Kenyon

2/16/08 -- Playing in their first real game, the Wolverines trailed 2-0 early in the first but used an outstanding faceoff effort from Brekan Kohlitz (left) and a tenacious ride to top Kenyon 14-7.  Kohlitz won 14 of his 18 draws to help Michigan establish a decided possession advantage.  Fellow captain Mark Hammitt and freshman attackman Trevor Yealy led the Wolverines with 3 goals apiece.  Graham Townsend recorded 10 saves in three quarters of play.  Michigan begins its MCLA schedule next weekend at Arizona State.

 

Wolverines Prepare with Pair of Preseason Scrimmages

2/10/08 -- Michigan played two NCAA teams this weekend in a pair of final tune-ups for the regular season.  The Wolverines hosted Division 3 Wittenberg on Friday and visited Division 1 Ohio State on Sunday.

 

Wolverines Wrap Up Fall Ball in Ohio

10/20/07 -- The Wolverines completed their fall ball schedule today, playing three scrimmages at Ohio Wesleyan university.  Michigan scrimmaged the hosts, along with Bellarmine and Wooster.

 

Wolverine Showcase Delivers Top-Notch Lacrosse

10/13/07 -- Lacrosse worlds collided last night in Ann Arbor as NCAA powers Johns Hopkins and Army traveled West to take on the Wolverines and each other in an evening of scrimmages.  Over 3000 fans packed Elbel Field on the Michigan campus for the event, held on the first cold night of the Fall.  Michigan held their own against the best in the nation, and Hopkins and Army played an exciting overtime scrimmage that ended with a Black Knight victory.  Michigan wraps up their Fall scrimmage schedule this Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan.

 

Four Seniors Named as 2008 Captains

9/19/07 -- Four seniors: Mark Hammitt, Brekan Kohlitz, Bobby Morales and Graham Townsend, were elected by their teammates to lead the 2008 Wolverines as captains. 
This is the first time since 2005 the team has been led by four captains.

 

Wolverines Add Broschart to the Coaching Staff

9/13/07 -- The University of Michigan Men's Lacrosse team has announced the hiring of former University of Arizona head coach Ken Broschart as an assistant coach for the 2008 season.  Broschart spent the last four seasons as the head coach at the University of Arizona where he led the Wildcats to four consecutive MCLA tournament appearances, earning WCLL Coach of Year honors in 2004.  Broschart was a three year NCAA Division 2 All-American at the New York Institute of Technology, where he played from 1997 to 2000.

 

Michigan to Host Hopkins and Army

7/24/07 -- The University of Michigan Men's Lacrosse team will take on defending NCAA Division 1 national champion Johns Hopkins University along with perennial top-25 Army on Friday, October 12th in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Elbel Field at 6:00 pm in an evening of scrimmages.  The homecoming event marks the first time Michigan has played host to a Division 1 team since 1992.  It also marks only the second time Johns Hopkins, the most storied program in college lacrosse, has traveled to Michigan and the first trip for Army.
