Welcome to UM PKU - 2007

The University of Michigan/Peking University
Summer Undergraduate Exchange Program

2007 Pilot Program in Chemistry

June 22 - Justin in his lab with his graduate mentor, Chen Luo.

(I'm posting this from the NWA Worldclub at Narita, between flights... what a wonderful world we live in).

June 22 - The last dinner I had with the students, before the kung fu show, was at Mr. Pizza "made for women" ...
  The Olympic Friendlies
June 22 - Some knock-off (on the street) versions of HuanHuan and JingJing now live at the apartment.
June 22 - You can find the account of this over in the student blogs, of how Brian joined the PKU Chemistry soccer tournament. Here are Brian and Charlie (or Sun Chiang Liang, the grad student who is working with Tiffany).
  June 22 - Uniforms!

June 22 -

The football: bouncing 12 feet or so off of Brian's head.

Brian: bouncing a few feet or so off of the ground.

(Note to the future: select students with super powers)

June 22 - Brian was sore all day Saturday, and Charlie broke the nail off of his big toe.
June 23 - Free time at Yanbeiyuan
June 24 - Some scenes from around the apartment and around campus.
June 24 - Some scenes from around the apartment and around campus. Although it lasted only about 30 minutes, today was the first day where there was any substantial rainfall, which always helps clear the air a bit.

June 25 - Here is the view looking to the south from the chemistry building during the afternoon commute. The East Gate of PKU is just past that little white building (on the right) with the blue roof. That white building, by the way, houses migrant workers who are doing substantial labor in construction-type jobs. One of the interesting lessons we got during the Boot Camp was when it was pointed out that the rural-to-urban migration within the country is the largest such movement in human history: 200 million people (put that in context: the entire population of the US is 300 million... so this is equivalent of the relocation of every person in the US between the ages of 15 and 64).
June 26 - On one of the decks at the chemistry building (this one is a smoking room).
June 26 - The view from the smoking room.
June 27 - The news today in Beijing is the weather. I big storm system moved in from the south and the sky turned dark at midday. This is a photoshop-enhanced image of an otherwise nearly nighttime view. This was the first substantial rain since late May.
June 27 - I'll post the picture from before the enhancement below...
  June 27 - ... here!
June 27 - Justin's research group, heading out to celebrate one of the students earning his PhD.
June 27 - Justin's research group at the celebration dinner.
June 27 - Justin's research group at the celebration dinner.
June 27 - Some of Justin's research group after a bit too much at the celebration dinner.
June 28 - Parking lots that also have spots for grass to grow.
June 28 - The local grocery store where the students shop.
June 28 - The local bike repair operation.
June 28 - Brian's group hard at work.
June 28 - Tiffany at work.
June 28 - Tiffany at work.
