The benzylic sp3 C-H bond is relatively reactive under certain conditions, and phenylethylamines have been used to construct pyrrole derivatives. However, as pyrroles are the core structure in many natural and pharmaceutical products, so it is often necessary to remove the aryl substituents. Therefore, it is important to develop a facile method to either remove the substituents, or to construct the pyrrole ring with synthetically useful functional groups.

Justin's project with Professor Haichao Liu

The project I am working on involves finding catalysts that will convert glycerol to1,3-propanediol with high yield and selectivity.  Some of the catalysts I will work with include Rh, Ru, Pd, and Pt on activated carbon supports, and nanoparticle clusters of Rh, Ru, Pd, and Pt

Brian O'Keefe
Brian's project with Professor Zhang

I am developing an aptamer for the fertility hormone hcg through the SELEX method. Currently, antibodies are used in the hospital to diagnose pregnancy, but aptimers can bind as well or better than antibodies and are much cheaper to produce.

Xiaowen Feng
Xiaowen's project with Professor Pecoraro

My work here is mainly about two projects: the first one is to get a new cluster which contains three kinds of metal ions, based on Prof.Pecoraro's work on metallacrowns, and try to synthesize Single Molecule Magnetics. The second is to synthesize new clusters with the metallacrowns that Prof.Pecoraro published. The structure of the compound that I want to get is more similar to the structure of layer biscuit .

I do like these projects and everything seems to be well. Working here is really of great fun!
