About the Program
Chemistry Department Announces the Michigan Chemistry
Fellows
Starting with the 2007-2008 academic year, the Department of Chemistry
invites nominations for postdoctoral fellowships in any area of chemistry
including interdisciplinary collaborations as well as traditional disciplines.
These prestigious awards will provide compensation of $50,000 per year
while offering significant professional development for the Fellows as
they make the transition towards an independent research career.
The development of professional chemists has two primary stepping stones
in the post-college phase: graduate school and the post-doctoral position.
Academic chemists have a probationary period as assistant professor that
is also a key developmental period. The University of Michigan chemistry
department has successfully modified both the graduate school experience
and the assistant professor experience in an effort to make chemistry more
attractive and more amenable to a diverse pool of candidates. Since
the post-doctoral experience is critical in the chemistry field and typically
serves as the launching point for the first job, impressions formed
and opportunities available during this time period greatly affect the
job choice of the individual. The Michigan Chemistry Fellows Program will
extend our innovative approach to the postdoctoral period in order to offer
Fellows an enhanced profession training experience from student
to independent researcher.
Now Seeking Nominations
We are now inviting nominations from faculty advisors and department chairs
for the Michigan Chemistry Fellows Program. There will be three application
deadlines throughout the year, but candidates may be nominated at any time.
Please note the next application deadline will be May 31, 2008.
Early nominations are encouraged to allow the candidate sufficient time
to prepare all application materials and obtain references. We recommend
submitting nominations a minimum of several weeks before the application
deadlines to ensure time to prepare the applications and obtain references.
Eligible nominees will be invited by the Chemistry Fellows Program
to complete an application for the fellowship. Direct applications
and self-nominations will not be accepted. Non-US citizens are responsible
for obtaining a J-1 status visa for the duration of their fellowship.
Chemistry at Michigan is Multifaceted and Interdisciplinary
Many faculty members in the department are active in areas of research that
bridge different areas of modern science research from biology and physics
to materials engineering and clinical medicine. The Chemistry Fellows Program
encourages collaborative and interfacial projects as well as more traditional
single-discipline work.
Professional Development
The postdoctoral experience is a very important period in the training of
a modern research scientist, offering the unique ability to dedicate oneself
exclusively to research while looking ahead towards independence. Professional
development in the form of lunches, and training sessions for grant writing
and research group management will amplify the Fellows' career-oriented
program.
