Welcome
to the Graduate Chemistry Program
at the University of Michigan
INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING ONLINE
Thank you for your interest in
our graduate program! We offer many exciting opportunities
for your PhD with strong research programs available
in the areas of Analytical (pdf), Chemical
Biology (pdf),
Inorganic (pdf), Materials (pdf), Organic (pdf),
and Physical (pdf)
chemistry. Over
250 excellent graduate students are already pursuing
projects in over 50 research groups.
The Chemistry
Department (pdf)
is located on the University of Michigan's central
campus next to the departments of Biology, Geology,
and Physics. Programs in Applied Physics and Biophysics
as well as the Schools of Natural Resources and
Pharmacy are also adjacent to Chemistry. The Life
Sciences Institute and Medical School are just
two and four blocks away respectively. The College
of Engineering is a short bus ride away. Chemistry's
central location fosters many productive interdisciplinary
interactions.
ADMISSIONS
Is there an application deadline?
A complete application (this
includes the supplementary materials) should be received
by the Department by December 15, 2008 for
International Students and January 15,
2009 for Domestic and Permanent Resident
Students. The official GRE and TOEFL scores must
be received by these deadlines as well as all supporting
materials. The earlier you get a complete application
to us the earlier your application will be reviewed.
The Admissions Committee will begin reviewing complete
applications at the beginning of December and making
decisions shortly thereafter and running through
the deadline.
Is there an application fee?
The $75 application fee is waived if you are a US citizen or permanent resident. If you are an International applicant, you must submit the application fee before your application will be reviewed; this fee will not be waived
How will you review my application?
The admissions committee consists of the Chair, Adam Matzger, and six other faculty members to ensure expertise in all areas of chemistry. We will review your file as soon as it is complete beginning in December. We pay careful attention to the letters of recommendation and your prior research experience. We will also study your college transcript and the results of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
When will I hear if I have been accepted to Michigan?
We will strive to respond as quickly as possible after your file has become complete and a decision has been made by the committee. The most common problem we encounter is not receiving your recommendation letters; please register your recommenders online when you apply. Also, you should request letters from professors as soon as possible.
Students in the US who are offered admission will be invited to attend one of two Recruiting Weekends to learn more about our program, the department, campus and city.
Recruiting Weekends for Fall 2009 Admission
March 6-8, 2009
March 27-29, 2009
How do I apply?
You will apply online. Click
here to access the instructions. Please
remember to register your recommenders at the start
of the online process. The Graduate School no longer
has paper applications, therefore applying online
is the only way to apply. Please do not list your
University lab address as your "Current Address" on
the application unless it has a full street number
and street name. Do not use Post Office Box numbers
because if we use an overnight delivery service
to send notices, it will not reach you.
Please also review the Rackham
Graduate School's Admission's website; Rackham
is the "umbrella" over all graduate
doctoral programs at the University. Their website
will provide valuable information about the application
process.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The Chemistry Department provides
12 months of financial support (including a generous
stipend, full tuition, and health care) during
each year of your program tenure.
