Instructions for Completing the Online Application

Proceed to the Rackham Graduate School online application. Be sure to indicate on the application your subplan (analytical, organic, chemical biology, physical, inorganic, or materials), otherwise your application will not be considered complete. You should review the Rackham Graduate School's Admissions website . Their website will provide valuable information about the application process and their requirements.

Note that your application fee of $75.00 will be waived if you are a US citizen or a permanent resident. Please do not list your University lab address as your "Current Address" on the application unless it has a full street number and street name. Do not use Post Office Box numbers because if we use an overnight delivery service to send notices it will not reach you.

DEADLINES

A complete application (this includes the supplementary materials) should be received by the Department by December 15, 2008 for International Students and January 15, 2009 for Domestic and Permanent Resident Students.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

(1) Research Statement: Upload your Research Statement online in place of the "Statement of Purpose." The Research Statement should be a maximum of three pages and must include:

•  Research experience: State the goals of your research and the accomplishments to date. You may include a list of publications or presentations (Do not send us the actual publications).

•  Clearly indicate area of research interest (analytical, organic, chemical biology, inorganic, physical, or materials).

•  List a minimum of three UM faculty whose research interests you.

(2) Personal Statement: This statement may be used to determine your suitability for specific fellowships. Your personal statement should enhance our understanding of the personal reasons that have driven you towards the Chemistry Doctoral Program.

(3) Resume/Curriculum Vitae: A CV is optional. If you choose to upload a short CV, include educational background, awards, research experiences, publications and presentations.   Otherwise, type N/A in the field.

(4) Three Letters of Recommendation:   Be sure to register the names of your recommenders when you fill out the online application. One of the letters must be from your current advisor. If any of the recommenders are not able to submit their letters on line, they may send the letters directly to us.

(5) Transcripts:

  (a) Submitting Unofficial Transcripts:   As part of the online application process you may upload an unofficial transcript which will expedite the processing of your application. When submitting transcripts online, upload the front and back of the transcript(s).

  (b) Sending Official Transcripts : All applicants are required to submit one set of official transcripts from undergraduate and postgraduate institutions to the Rackham Graduate School. Submit your application before sending your academic records/transcripts to Rackham. This will to allow your documents to be processed more quickly. If your transcript is not in English, please make sure that we also receive an official translation. (If you are unable to upload your academic record/transcript during the online application process, you may send official documents to the department.)

Official documents must be provided by the institution awarding the degree. Academic records certified by notary publics are not official. Click here for more details on which type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution: in the United States, in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, in the People's Republic of China, in Puerto Rico, Europe, South America, East & Central Europe, Asia, the Middle East , Outside the United States Where the Official Language of the Institution is English Exclusively, in a Country that Awards a Bologna Degree.

If you do not have a U-M ID#, you may obtain one by registering as a Future Grad Student. The University of Michigan will assign a U-M ID# to your record within 7-10 business days. Indicating your University of Michigan ID number on your application and application documents allows your records to be matched and processed more quickly! If the deadline is within 7-10 days, submit your documents with your date of birth.

If you do not obtain a U-M ID number before mailing your academic records/transcripts to Rackham, it is important that you inform us of any name changes. This includes Former Last Name/Family Name/Surname and Former First Name/Given Name that appear on your academic records/transcripts. This information will enable us to match your records to your application quickly.

(6) Official GRE and TOEFL Score Reports: You must request ETS to send your scores to the University of Michigan - use code 1839. You will not need a department code. We require the GRE General test and recommend that you take the GRE Subject test. The TOEFL is required for students who have not obtained their degrees from approved English-speaking institutions. You may also send us a copy of the score reports you have received. Please make sure you list your full name as it appears on your online application and your UM-ID# on the copy of the score reports. Scores must be received by the application deadline for your application to be reviewed.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Any documents that you could not upload during the online application process and letters of recommendation that the recommenders could not upload online may be sent to the Chemistry Department. Please make sure your name and your UM ID# are printed on the envelope(s) so that we can quickly add them to your application file.

Shortly after your application is processed by the Graduate School, you will receive an email from them. Within that email you will find information and instructions on setting up your "Friend" account on Wolverine Access. Please follow those instructions and set up your account as that will allow you to track your application and materials as well as any admission offers.
