Be sure to indicate on the application your subplan (analytical,
organic, chemical biology, physical, inorganic, or materials),
otherwise your application will not be considered complete. You should
review the Rackham
Graduate School's Admissions website. Their website will provide
valuable information about the application process and their requirements.
Note that your application fee of $75.00 will be waived if you are a US
citizen or a permanent resident. Please do not list your University lab
address as your "Current Address" on the application unless it has a
full street number and street name. Do not use Post Office Box numbers
because if we use an overnight delivery service to send notices it will
not reach you.
A complete application (this includes the supplementary materials) should be received by the Department by December 15, 2012 for International Students and December 31, 2012 for Domestic and Permanent Resident Students.
(1) Research Statement: Upload your Research Statement online in place of the "Statement of Purpose." The Research Statement should be a maximum of three pages and must include:
(2) Personal Statement: This statement may be used to determine your suitability for specific fellowships. Your personal statement should enhance our understanding of your personal background and life experiences, including educational, cultural, familial, or other opportunities or challenges (500 words max).
(3) Resume/Curriculum Vitae: A CV is optional. If you choose to upload a short CV, include educational background, awards, research experiences, publications and presentations. Otherwise, type N/A in the field.
(4) Three Letters of Recommendation: Be sure to register the names of ALL of your recommenders when you fill out the online application. One of the letters must be from your current advisor. If any of the recommenders are not able to submit their letters on line, they may send the letters directly to us, along with this form: http://www.rackham.umich.edu/downloads/admissions/RecFormPaper.pdf, though this may delay the processing of your application.

(5) Transcripts:
(a) Submitting Unofficial Transcripts: As part of the online application process you may upload an unofficial transcript which will expedite the processing of your application. When submitting transcripts online, upload the front and back of the transcript(s). Do not upload unofficial transcripts from community colleges, non-degree programs, study abroad programs, or for Associates degrees, unless relevant coursework from these programs is NOT included on your undergraduate degree transcript.
(b) Sending Official Transcripts: All applicants are required to submit one set of official transcripts from undergraduate and postgraduate institutions to the Rackham Graduate School. Submit your application before sending your academic records/transcripts to Rackham. This will to allow your documents to be processed more quickly. If your transcript is not in English, please make sure that we also receive an official translation.

Official documents must be provided by the institution awarding the degree. Academic records certified by notary publics are not official. Click here for more details on which type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution: in the United States, in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, in the People's Republic of China, in Puerto Rico, Europe, South America, East & Central Europe, Asia, the Middle East , Outside the United States Where the Official Language of the Institution is English Exclusively, in a Country that Awards a Bologna Degree.
If you do not have a U-M ID#, you may obtain one by registering as a Prospective Grad Student. The University of Michigan will assign a U-M ID# to your record within 7-10 business days. Indicating your University of Michigan ID number on your application and application documents allows your records to be matched and processed more quickly! If the deadline is within 7-10 days, submit your documents with your date of birth.
If you do not obtain a U-M ID number before mailing your academic records/transcripts to Rackham, it is important that you inform us of any name changes. This includes Former Last Name/Family Name/Surname and Former First Name/Given Name that appear on your academic records/transcripts. You should also include your date of birth. This information will enable us to match your records to your application quickly.
(6) Official GRE and TOEFL Score Reports: You must request ETS to send your scores to the University of Michigan - use code 1839. You will not need a department code. The GRE Subject test is optional. The TOEFL is required for students who have not obtained their degrees from approved English-speaking institutions. Scores must be received by the application deadline for your application to be reviewed.
If you or your recommenders have any trouble uploading documents, please contact help@applyweb.com for assistance. If you still cannot upload the necessary documents online, you may send copies to the Chemistry Department, though this may delay the processing of your application.

Once your application is complete, it will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. The Chemistry Department will contact you once a decision has been made. Please DO NOT contact the Rackham Graduate School with inquiries on the status of your application, as they do not know the answer to that question. If you have not yet heard from the Chemistry Department regarding your application, a decision has not yet been made.
