Auren Kaplan

Mr. Kaplan's political interest lies in both domestic and global politics and political economy, with a particular interest in Latin American affairs. To that end, he is currently writing a senior thesis on the ways in which globalization has altered development paths in Latin America. Mr. Kaplan currently works at the Center for Automotive Research, where he focuses on economic development strategies. Previously, Mr. Kaplan served as co-Chair of the Voice Your Vote Commission, a non-partisan voter registration organization. He is studying at the University of Michigan on a full tuition and housing scholarship, the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship.

Mr. Kaplan is an Honors student in his fourth year at the University of Michgan, with concentrations in both Spanish and Political Science. He plans to pursue both entrepreneurship and business consulting after graduation.

 

Arvind Sohoni

Mr. Sohoni is a senior in the Ross School of Business, concentrating in Finance and Corporate Strategy, along with a minor in Political Science. His love for politics was cultivated at a young age and he has a particular interest in American electoral politics and metropolitan regional planning. Mr. Sohoni is widely involved in campus life, serving as the Student Body Vice President as well as a member of Kappa Alpha Pi Pre-Law Fraternity. He is also involved in the surrounding Ann Arbor community, working as an assistant basketball coach at a local high school. This is his fourth year as a member of The Journal, previously serving one year as an associate editor and two years as the Finance Senior Editor.

After graduation, Mr. Sohoni is planning to return to McKinsey & Company, where he spent this past summer as a business analyst, serving large private equity and telecommunications clients. His long term goals include law school and a potential return to the public sector later in life.

Ms. Johnson is interested in a variety of domestic and international issues. For the past two summers, she has interned at the State Public Policy Group (SPPG), a public policy consulting firm, located in the capital of the great state of Iowa. Her work at SPPG has allowed her to explore policy issues on a local, state and national level that ranged from education to health care to veterans. At U of M, Ms. Johnson has been actively involved with The Roosevelt Institution, where she serves as Co-Director for the Health Care Policy Center.

Ms. Johnson is currently a junior in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. She plans to concentrate in the regions of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

 

 

Jonathan Hill

Jonathan Hill is a third year in the BA program at the Ford School of Public Policy. Along with MJPS, Jon serves as Co-President of the Michigan chapter of the Roosevelt Institution. Jon has previously worked as an intern in the War Room of the John McCain 2008 campaign and as Communications Director for the Scott Harper for Congress Campaign (D-IL-13). Jon is a Semester at Sea (S08) alumni, and is currently planning on spending summer 2009 working on economic research in rural Malawi.

Jon's interests include American politics and international development.

Andrea Hsu

Ms. Hsu is a senior majoring in Political Science and minoring in Biology. During the past summer she interned for a senator and held a fellowship with the Texas Office of the Governor. Previously at the Center for Disease Control in Taiwan, she studied enteroviruses and edited scientific papers. She has also engaged in research on renal stem cells at the University of Michigan Medical School and served on the executive board of the Taiwanese American Students Association.

Ms. Hsu is interested in domestic and international law and politics, as well as political economy and theory. She plans to attend law school after graduating.

 

 

Vanshika Vij

Ms. Vij is a senior in the Ford School of Public Policy, focusing on foreign policy and conflict. She has traveled extensively and has volunteered with the Peace Corps in Thailand. In the past, she has worked for Search for Common Ground, an international conflict-resolution NGO, and Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, an NGO working on social enterprise. In addition, she conducts research on election violence, is involved with Net Impact Undergrad, an organization which promotes sustainable business, and is a member of the American MENSA Society. She loves dancing of all kinds and learning languages. She speaks Spanish and is conversational in Hindi and Portuguese. She hopes to eventually work in human rights and diplomacy.

Associate Editors

Preya Adusumalli

Ms. Adusumalli is a senior majoring in Political Science and Psychology. She has a strong interest in issues of social justice, human rights, economic development and conflict resolution. Within political science, her focus is on foreign policy

During winter 2008, Ms. Adusumalli interned with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India where she worked in the economic section. Ms. Adusumalli spent the past summer interning with the Office of Governor Jon Corzine in New Jersey. After graduation, Ms. Adusumalli will attend law school. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in the federal government. .

Harun Buljina

Mr. Buljina is a junior majoring in History and Eastern European Studies and minoring in German. His academic interests include Bosniak-Muslim nationalization and ethnogenesis, as well as the Yugoslavian wars and successor states. He has a strong interest in several aspects of the political sciences, including international relations, nationalism and political philosophy.

Mr. Buljina is also an associate editor at the Michigan Daily, and a member of the Phi Alpha Theta history honors society. After graduation in June 2010, he hopes to spend a few years in Europe, continuing his studies and perfecting his language skills. He hopes to eventually attend law school and pursue a career related to his research interests.

Jane Coaston

Jane Coaston is a senior double majoring in history and political science and minoring in modern European studies. She is writing an honors thesis on Nazi propaganda during and after Battle of Stalingrad. She is Executive Editor of the Michigan Review, a conservative and libertarian publication, and will be Editor-in-Chief during the winter semester. She hopes to pursue journalism as a career after graduation, examining matters of foreign policy and political culture.


 

Josh Handell

Mr. Handell had volunteered for numerous local and statewide Republican campaigns before partially defecting from the GOP and spending last summer in Washington D.C. interning for the American Civil Liberties Union. Nevertheless, he was recently elected to a two-year term as a Republican Precinct Delegate from Saginaw, MI. He is also a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, an alumnus of the Public Service Intern Program, a Bentley scholar, and a member in good standing of both College Republicans and College Democrats.

Mr. Handell is a sophomore in the Honors program. He intends to dual-enroll in the Ford School of Public Policy while pursuing an Honors Individual Concentration in International Law.

 

 

Lucy Liu

I am Lucy Liu, I am a sophomore in the honors program pursuing a major in political science with a minor in Asian studies. I was an intern in the World Trade Organization in Shenzhen China in the years 2006 and 2007, where I was able to work for the consulting services department and attend private meetings with prestigious companies such as MEAD, IBM/ISTC, and the Chinese/Australian Free Trade Agreement meeting headed by Australian Prime Minister John Howard. I am really interested in Chinese politics, American politics, and their political dialogue in the future. I am currently working on a research project studying both America and China?s response to foreign policy failure. I was also Miss Teen Washtenaw County in 2006. I have played the piano since I was 6 and I have won numerous awards including the honored completion of the highest level 10 in Piano for the ?Student Achievement Testing? sponsored by the Michigan Music Teachers Association. I am also currently an English tutor in the Northwood Language Community Program.

Will Mirrer

Mr. Mirrer is a senior majoring in Economics and Political Science. He is currently writing an Honors Thesis in Political Science on the relative effectiveness of “leadership” as a racial cue in biracial elections. Mr. Mirrer is a James B. Angell Scholar and a Presidential Fellow at the Center for the Study of the Presidency.

Mr. Mirrer is currently employed as an Economics Research Assistant at the Center for Automotive Research. He previously worked as an upper-level economics tutor, and for the Michigan football team. He also worked in the office of Congressman Maurice Hinchey. Mr. Mirrer plans on attending law school upon graduation

 


Becky Myrick

Ms. Myrick is in her fourth year at the University of Michigan, majoring in Economics with a minor in Political Science. Among her academic interests are political economy, environmental economics, economic philosophy, political theory, and American political processes. Outside interests include sailing, writing, cooking, and traveling. She is an active member of the Michigan Economics Society, and hopes to become an economic analyst upon graduation.


Paul Oliver

Mr. Oliver is a senior majoring in Political Science and Near Eastern Studies. He spent the 2007-2008 academic year studying Arabic and Middle Eastern politics in Cairo, Egypt. His internship experience includes positions with the United States Agency for International Development and the Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey, California.

Mr. Oliver is a member of the Michigan Marching Band and enjoys traveling, running, cycling, and playing the piano. Upon graduation, he plans on working in Washington, DC, and eventually pursuing graduate studies in political science or public policy.

 

Edward Perry

Mr. Perry has strong interests in political theory, business economics, public policy law, and electoral analysis. He is also involved with the Michigan Journal of International Affairs, the Michigan Review, and M-Powered Entrepreneurs. His professional experience includes interning at the District of Columbia’s Office of the Attorney General and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in addition to forming and operating a licensed corporation.

Mr. Perry is a fourth year student at the University of Michigan concentrating in Political Science. Upon graduation, he hopes to either pursue a master’s degree in public policy or attend law school.

Shannon Seiferth

Ms. Seiferth's primary interests are international relations and constitutional law. She has volunteered in the past in the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver and for the Obama campaign. In addition, she worked as a vote captain in the residence halls at the university for College Democrats during the 2008 presidential campaign. She is also actively involved on campus with Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Ms. Seiferth is in her first year at the University of Michigan. She is currently enrolled in the Honors college, pursuing a double major in political science and English. After her undergraduate studies, she plans to attend law school.

Erin Thorsby

Ms. Thorsby has great interest in international politics, particularly international trade and human rights, as well as domestic monetary policy. She grew up volunteering for local campaigns in her hometown and is excited to join the Michigan Journal of Political Science. She worked abroad in Argentina last summer and hopes to focus in international business in the future

Ms. Thorsby is a third-year student majoring in Economics with a minor in International Studies at the University of Michigan.

Raj Vashi

Mr. Vashi is a member ofthe Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity, a member of the Indian American Student Association, and a volunteer at Providence Hospital of Southfield for the past three years. He is also a recipient of the Engineering Scholarship of Honor.

Mr. Vashi has an unbridled passion for international politics and affairs and also considers himself to be a formidable table tennis player.

Mr. Vashi is a fourth year student in the College of Engineering, concentrating in Industrial and Operations Engineering. His primary interest in the field is ergonomics.

Natalie Warrick

Ms. Warrick has worked as an intern for the Dick DeVos for Governor Campaign, where she helped to organize events and coordinate volunteers at several Oakland County offices. She has also spent the summer of 2007 in Washington, D.C., where she was selected to be an intern for the Congressional Institute, assisting in research on generational differences in the congressional workplace for a published handbook. Ms. Warrick worked with the Institute to coordinate several Leadership Luncheons, including a session with Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee. She spent the summer of 2008 preparing for law school, working for the Honorable James Kandrevas as a probation assistant for the 28th District Court of Michigan, and studied at the world-famous Sorbonne in Paris, France.

Ms. Warrick is a senior at the University of Michigan, majoring in Political Science and minoring in French and Francophone Studies. She is currently applying to law schools around the nation for admittance in Fall 2009.
