About Us
The Division of Molecular Medicine & Genetics is part of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and actively participates in clinical, educational and research activities. It is comprised of 23 primary and joint faculty, including members with co-appointments in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, as well as the Life Sciences Institute.
RESEARCH: The research mission of the Division is to combine insights into human genetic disease states with basic scientific research to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these disorders. The ultimate goals of the faculty are to improve early diagnosis, treatment and cure of human disease. Ongoing research programs by Division faculty are broad ranging and include the study of cancer, diabetes, coagulopathies, hearing loss, developmental disorders and immunodeficiencies. This scientific milieu provides a diverse and fertile environment for the training of undergraduate, graduate and medical students as well as post-doctoral fellows.
CLINICAL: The Medical Genetics Clinic at the University of Michigan represents a unique resource in the region for evaluation, diagnosis and counseling of individuals who have or may be at risk for genetic diseases. The clinic involves the joint efforts of UM faculty, physicians, medical geneticists and board-certified genetic counselors that work together to render appropriate screening, diagnosis, evaluation, counseling and treatment for patients' and their families. The Medical Genetics Clinic, established in 1941, is the oldest genetics clinic in the country. The University of Michigan genetics faculty are known nationally and internationally for their work and are committed to providing quality healthcare, conducting research and teaching the next generation of clinicians and researchers.
