Research Interests

My aims are (1) to stimulate productive research relationships between biological and clinical scientists and counterparts in computational, mathematical, and statistical disciplines; and (2) to discover, validate, and apply protein biomarkers for early diagnosis and for exploration of pathways and targets for treatment of lung and prostate cancers, employing proteomics and informatics approaches. Under the National Center for Integrative Biomedical Informatics (www.ncibi.org) we study and model prostate cancer progression, type 1 diabetes complications, and the genotypic heterogeneity of type 2 diabetes and bipoloar disease with novel computational tools and deep integration methods. Under the Proteomics Alliance for Cancer (Michigan Life Sciences Corridor), we pursue new technology, study human tumor and cell line specimens, and develop databases for the findings. We have the lead role for the Human Proteome Organization international collaboration on the HUPO Plasma Proteome Project. Extensive findings from the Pilot Phase were published in August 2005 in a special issue of Proteomics entitled "Exploring the Human Plasma Proteome". This work provides a foundation for studies of variation across populations and sub-populations, and within individuals over time due to physiological, pathological, and pharmacological perturbations.
