The University of Michigan chapter of Mortar Board does several community service and scholarship based programs each year. Our two primary public activities are Student Organizational Roundtable, and the P.R.O.F.S lecture series.

This year's class is also working with 826 Michigan to tutor students in the Ann Arbor area. Our class also Adopted a family for Christmas. We are also volunteering to help Circle-K at Kid's Fair, are taking over a site at DP-Day, and have helped sponsor events for some of the other groups are members participate in (e.g. Protest Art Show, DM Charity Ball).

Student Organization Roundtable:

The Student Organizational Roundtable is an event put on by Mortar Board and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership. Roundtable is currently in its second year, and we hope to make it better every month. Roundtable presents student organizations the opportunity to meet one another, listen to speakers on topics relevant to the functioning of their organization. Our hope is that Roundtable will aid student groups in collaborating on events and projects they might not otherwise have thought of, while providing a fun atmosphere, and free food. This event is held once a month, upcoming roundtables for the 2005-2006 school year are:

The series is designed to bring students together with popular and influential Professors at the University that they might not otherwise have contact with. Our aim is to bring in Professors from a variety of departments to appeal to the greatest number of students, and to have a wide breadth of topics. Community Service Projects:

The major service project for the Mortar Board Class of 2006 is working with 826 Michigan to assist students with their writing. In addition to helping with "zine" workshops in the Fall term (a zine is a mini-magazine the kids put together) we are running a play workshop during the winter term. Mortar Board members will go to 826 Michigan on Mondays to help students write and put on their own play, with a performance in April. The project will give students an opportunity to be creative, practice their writing and acting skills, and put on a whole performance themselves!

Kid's Fair Mortar Board will be at Crisler Arena on March 10th to help Circle K with their great program, Kid's Fair! We're really looking forward to getting our hands into some fun arts and crafts projects :-)

Mortar Board is also taking part in DP-Day in April! We are taking over an entire site to help the community through the great program the Detroit Project puts on each year. It should be a great time, a good wrap-up for our outgoing class, and a wonderful start to the year for the Mortar Board class of 2007!

About 826 Michigan: 826 Michigan is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students aged 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. 826 opened its doors in June of 2005. Since then, we have been blessed with students, tutors, and volunteers overflowing with enthusiasm. The organization strongly believes that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. To make that a reality, 826 Michigan provides drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.
