If you are pursuing a high-profile finance career in a dynamic industry, Ethicon Endo-Surgery is the place for you. A subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson (J&J), Ethicon Endo-Surgery researches and develops surgical products and procedures for videoscopic and traditional surgeries. As an Associate in Ethicon's MBA Financial Management Program, graduates rotate 3-5 times in an 18-24 month period throughout several Finance functions, including Business Development, Sales and Marketing, and Operations. During the rotation, Associates will actively contribute financial analysis of new business and product opportunities to several cross-functional teams, presenting findings to senior management many times throughout their career.
I had a fantastic day at Ethicon Endo-Surgery. My host was John Riccardi, a 1997 UMBS graduate, completing his second rotation in Operations Finance. To begin the day, John provided a well-prepared overview of J&J and its six worldwide professional companies. I was given a tour of the Endo-Surgery Institute, where both surgeons and employees may attend seminars on anything from anatomy to new product demonstrations. The most eye-opening part of the tour was observing surgeons, dressed in scrubs, actually practicing new surgical techniques.
Finally, I observed John taking a lead role in meetings with the Director of Packaging Systems and the Director of Operations Finance. His most rigorous project will address response strategies to recent industry consolidations. I felt as if I was back in Corporate Strategy class, thinking of Porter's Five Forces, and the need for companies to constantly react to changes in the competitive arena. John has definitely received both exposure and recognition for his hard-work after only a little more than a year at the company.
Given my impressions from the day, the breadth of experiences and opportunities will provide a challenging and rewarding career for any MBA within such a dynamic industry.
