Well, I must say it's about time. After all the years I have spent at Michigan, someone finally got the idea to open a blues joint near campus. After Rick's began to shift from live music to more DJ's a few years ago, the city of Ann Arbor was left without a consistent place to hear the blues. Thankfully, someone saw the niche market. Amer's First Street Grill opened up recently with quiet but impressive fanfare. The style of the Grill harks back to the classic days of the jazz and blues supper clubs of the 40's and 50's. This is the blues with class. Fine dining in a posh wood and brick decor, with great performances in an intimate setting. The club has already been graced by the performance of Grammy winner and guitar master, Duke Robillard during its opening week. Shows are typically on Friday and Saturday nights (it operates as a regular restaurant other nights), with sets at 10:00pm and Midnight. The shows are booked with national acts, generally pro blues players of the club circuit. Tickets are usually $8 for advance tickets, and $10 the night of the show. For a full evening, this is the perfect place for a dinner and a show. For a more economical alternative, drinks/dessert and a show will still get you a good seat to hear some blues. If you are itching to hear some good music on the weekend, this is a great place to do it in style.

The Element, Ann Arbor's newest and most upcoming local band,
will be playing three more shows before the end of 1998. These
shows will provide a great opportunity for MBAs and BBAs to take
a break from the rigors of the end of a semester (and to do some
drinking). With a sound that is beyond categorization, it would
be unfair to label The Element "rock," "funk,"
jamming," or any other genre. The sound, my friends, is elemental.
Once you see them live, you will understand.
The band consists of Dave Bronson on bass, Jeremy Bronson on drums, Evan Greene on guitar, and Jordan Shapiro playing his Fender Rhodes piano. All four band members are currently seniors at the University of Michigan. Lee Seelig, a BBA2, uses the expertise he garners in the Business School to manage the band. So, go out and see The Element. Not only will you have a great time, but you will be supporting a fellow Business School student who is trying to make it in the real world. The dates are as follows:
Tuesday, DECEMBER 8, 1998- Blind Pig Showcase Night: The Element, Lurch, Pamela West, and Sweet Kelly. Each band will have a 30-40 minute set. 18+ show, no cover, $5 pitchers of Bell's, 9 p.m.
Thursday, DECEMBER 10, 1998- Touchdown Café: The Element, 2 sets of music, $3 cover, 21+, 9 p.m.
Saturday, DECEMBER 12, 1998- Mitch's Place: The Element, 2 sets of music, $3 cover, 21+, 9 p.m. Last show of 1998!
For more information, or for booking, contact Lee Seelig @ 930-9530
The Element are Jeremy Bronson, Evan Greene, Jordan Shapiro and Dave Bronson.

It's Christmas time and dozens of holiday albums are back on record store shelves and on-line at www.whatevermusicwebsiteyouwanttoinserthere.com. This year marks the debut of many artists onto the Christmas and Holiday album scene. One group that is exploding on the gift-giving season is the group 'N Sync. These 5 guys (Chris, Lance, J.C., Justin, and Joey), originally from Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New York, Mississippi and DC are inspired by the likes of Boyz II Men, the Beatles, and Stevie Wonder. They have put together a holiday album that combines traditional hymns, a little Doo Wop, and a bit of urban flavor that will make this CD one of the best sellers of the season. Their album, Home for Christmas, is one of the best-selling Holiday CD's on the Amazon.com Music web-site and has so far received an average 5-star rating from all customer reviews.
The 14-song album is fun to listen to and has R&B, Pop-Rock, and a Cappella songs that will not disappoint. My personal favorite songs on the album are "Merry Christmas Happy Holidays", and "Kiss Me At Midnight". Both songs really put you in the mood for the holiday season and get you excited for the end of finals, snowball fights, and watching the Rudolph and Frosty specials on CBS.
Although many compare 'N sync to other groups like the Backstreet Boys and New Kids
on the Block, many of their die-hard fans say that 'N Sync is
the 'real deal' and are extremely talented in the dance as well
as the vocal departments. Their first album, a platinum debut,
was a high energy compilation that included the mega-hits "Tearing
up my heart" and 'I want you back". They were recently
part of the Annual NYC Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and have
sold out upcoming concert dates in Dallas, Los Angeles, Baton
Rouge, and San Diego in 12, 20, 10, and 8 minutes, respectively.
I recently ran into 'N Sync at a McDonald's in downtown Chicago on a Saturday morning after a rough night of dancing and entertaining. After putting down a couple of McBiscuits and whatever other grease bombs we were able to purchase, the guys mentioned that they had just opened up for Janet Jackson the night before and were in desperate need of the Golden Arches. They themselves were involved in some after-concert partying and the Mickey D's medicinal visit was a 'must'.
So if you're looking for a stocking stuffer and can't figure out what the right thing is for that special someone or for yourself, check out Home for Christmas by 'N Sync. Pick it up, bring it home, take off that annoying tape on the top of the CD cover, and play song #4. I guarantee you won't be disappointed and you'll start whippin' candy canes and Holiday Cheer at everyone you see. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all at UMBS. Manny V.
After a full
year's worth of naughty bits and debauchery, I feel satisfied
that Ihave tarnished this paper with an adequate amount of strange
and lewd material, inappropriate for a Business School paper.
Needless to say, Iam quite happy. I must, at this time, give thanks
to those who made it all possible. The wonderful Exec Board, who
let me completely disregard the standards of production. My fellow
editors, who Idrank free beer and ate free pizza with. The great
staff, who corrected my mistakes, wrote articles for leisure,
and took the great photos the page needed. Thank you all. I wish
my successor and the new staff all the best.
