Senior Associate Dean Paul Danos looks forward to building on the Tuck School's many existing strengths when he assumes the office of dean on July 1.
"The thought of being in charge is very appealing," Danos stated in an interview conducted last Wednesday. "Tuck has a number of strengths, including the personal attention given each student, the school's general management approach, and the incredible cohesiveness among students, faculty, and alumni. I look forward to leveraging these strengths and adding 'focused quality' to what is already a very strong business school."
Dean Danos has served as a faculty member at the Michigan Business School for the last 21 years. For the past four years, he has held the position of Senior Associate Dean, and has been in charge of many operations at the Business School.
"The Michigan Business School is terrific, in that it has differentiating attributes that very few business schools have. I'm going to miss the various global initiatives (such as the recently formed Daewoo partnership) that I've been involved in here."
At Dartmouth, Danos will lead a business school that is much smaller than U-M (Tuck does not have a BBA program, nor does it offer a night MBA). In addition, the school has been without a dean for approximately one year, after former Dean Edward Fox was denied a second term. When asked if this situation caused him to hesitate in accepting the position, Danos replied "No, it didn't. What happened with the previous dean was a unique circumstance."
Danos noted that Tuck "will never have the diverse line-up of faculty and course offerings that U-M does. Michigan takes sort of a laissez-faire approach to business education, in that we try to give students as many different course and program options as possible. Tuck, by contrast, specializes in a more personal approach to business education."
Developing stronger partnerships with corporations will be one of Danos's key goals at Dartmouth. "On the whole, the program doesn't need a lot of fixing. While I'm still studying the situation, I'm glad that I have a number of very positive options."
