Question of the Week

ÒWhat single event had the most profound effect on the business community this summer?Ó

Nothing. Just wait until B-school rankings come out in a month. Then youÕll see Òprofound effect.Ó

-D. Greg Krikorian, MBA2

The Financial Turmoil in Russia that generated a huge chain effect to Europe, Latin America and the globe as a whole.

-Joe Chang, BBA1

The most profound event of the summer... an admitted (like there was any doubt) an inappropriate relationship with a 21-year-old. Politics shapes the business environment, and it will be very interesting to see what an effect this debacle will have come election time.

-Keenan Driscoll, MBA1

The impact the Asian crisis had on the US stock market. The large drop in the Dow has finally reminded investors the last several years of strong growth is not guaranteed.

-Mateo Alejandre, MBA 1

Too easy - the increase in B-School tuition! Duh!

-Piyush Bhargava, MBA2

Definitely not President ClintonÕs inappropriate relationship with Monica Lewinsky. The world economic system and free trade were put to test with countries in Asia (and Russia and South America) began to lose faith in IMF prescriptions for managing the economy to overcome the economic crisis. Some countries went so far as to adopt policies that run counter to IMF prescriptions (e.g. currency control in Malaysia, expansion of money supply in Russia), in direct challenge to the economic orthodoxy preached by IMF (and US).

-Kwee Hong Teh, MBA1

My turning 21 in June!

-Ryan Perrone, BBA2

Russian crisis! The effects of the downfall of Asian tigers combined with Russian political and economic turmoil increased the volatility in stock markets and re-valuation of asset and commodity prices. It was the biggest shock to rock the business world this summer.

-Gourang Shah, MBA2

Corporate consolidation. it missed the big headlines because itÕs not brow-raising tabloid stuff.

-Niko Voutsinas, BBA1

The merger between Chrysler and Daimler Benz, without a doubt.

-Daniel Johnson, BBA1

The Russian financial crisis will ultimately have the greatest impact of all the events that transpired during the summer. The world financial markets have not yet seen all of the ramifications that are likely to come from the turmoil that has surfaced. It is very possible that the woes that Russia has seen could spread across the world and force more currency devaluationÕs and further slow world economic growth. Not to mention it doesnÕt help me get a #$%$^ job!

-Jason Smith, MBA2

- Overheard by Devin LaSalle, MBA1

This is from a trader at BankBoston when I asked him about the efficient market theory:

ÒThat is all bull taught by the B-schools. Here, my friend, I have made millions in a week on pure arbitrage opportunities. For example, Argentinian Par and Disc move together. One day, Pars were above the yield curve and Discounts were not. Immediately, I bought Pars and sold Discount and kaboom - made $9 million the next day without investing a single penny. Would this be possible if markets were efficient?Ó

- Overheard by Gourang Shah, MBA2

Sonia Verma, explaining her nail polish, ÒIÕm ALL about indulgence.Ó

- Overheard by Matt Rautenberg, MBA2
