With increased focus on health and fitness an evaluation of postural changes in weight lifting is necessary. Understanding the effects of changes in posture while lifting weights may help reduce injury. Specifically, how does the posture change or trunk sway in a standing bicep curl with changing weight? An evaluation of postural stability during repetitive lifting of submaximal load revealed that postural stability declined as the test endured. (Sparto et al, 1997) Research has shown that changes in the sagittal plane postural alignment may correlate to recurring cervical pain. (Harrison et al, 1996) We will expand on these findings and evaluate the effects on posture with changing weight.
The subject used for evaluation is a college aged female who will perform bicep curls with both a 30 lb and 45 lb weight. We will observe joint movements at the shoulder, hip and trunk movement in the sagittal plane. We expect to observe a decline in postural stability with the heavy weight.
