We will be examining the shoulder press exercise using two common methods---the barbell and dumbbells. Since shoulder pain is the second most commonly encountered orthopedic problem in primary care sports medicine (Howard and O'Connor, 1997), we feel that it is important to learn more about the shoulder itself, and the most effective means of training it and preventing injury. If injuries do occur to the shoulder, the shoulder press can be modified to fit the needs of the individual (Fees et al., 1998).
