Why is my.umich needed?
The my.umich Web environment helps serve the diversity and complexity of this world-class institution. It can accommodate the needs of U-M students, faculty, and staff, and support their academic and research endeavors, their administrative transactions, and their extracurricular interests.
The my.umich Web environment provides members of the U-M community with efficient access to general campus information, as well as a path to resources and services that are specific to their needs. my.umich also has the potential to serve as a resource for making early contact with prospective students as well as new faculty and staff. Guest access to my.umich resources (when implemented) will encourage visitors to explore the opportunities awaiting them here.
Providing information and services in the my.umich environment will foster coordination among U-M's information technology (IT) resources and the many non-IT resources and services that can be delivered on the Web. The my.umich environment can help organize the complex, multi-layered presentation of services and information and make it easier for people to understand and access the resources that are available to them. It can also enable individuals associated with more than one unit to access divergent resources from a single environment.
The my.umich environment offers economies of scale by coordinating access to core institutional services, as well as some non-core resources, through a centralized source. Efficiency is also realized with multiple sites for maintenance and faster, more consistent access to new technologies.
