National Association of Housing Cooperatives

NAHC Intern

The National Association of Housing Cooperatives, headquartered in Washington, D.C., serves existing housing cooperatives and encourages the formation of new housing cooperatives to provide affordable homeownership opportunities in the U.S.
An internship is available starting as early as May-June and going through early November. Start date is negotiable, but the internship must extend through the NAHC conference in September and follow-up work the remainder of the month. This is the time when the NAHC office of 5 people is at peak workload, planning the annual training conference, updating membership records, and putting together several annual publications.
The intern will coordinate speakers and trainers for the annual conference, assist with registrations, handle inquiries from members, write press releases and newsletter articles, prepare brochures and flyers, proofread material that has to be exactly right, and help coordinate tours and optional events. The intern will be the right hand person for the Meeting Coordinator during the annual conference, held in Phoenix, AZ from September 10 - 14, 2002.
Skills should include excellent oral and written communication ability, and ease with personal computer programs in word processing, Excel, Access, etc. The successful intern will need to work well under pressure, handle multiple duties simultaneously, be well organized and attentive to detail, be a quick learner, be willing to take on responsibility, and be ready to work with and accept input from multiple people. Background, experience, or study relating to marketing, meeting planning, communications, and any type of consumer cooperative or relating to housing management is desirable. The hours can be full time, or they can be flexible and part-time, except for the month of September, when full time hours are required. The intern will be compensated with an hourly wage as well as metro fare.

Chicago Mutual Housing Network

Membership/Advocacy Associate

Founded in 1994, the Chicago Mutual Housing Network (CMHN) advocates, supports, and develops resident-owned and managed housing for low-moderate income households in the Chicago metropolitan area. A member-based organization, the Network represents and addresses the needs of over 40 different housing cooperatives, affordable condominium associations, and mutual housing associations. During 2001, CMHN provided training and technical assistance to over 450 individuals, impacting over 1,700 housing units. In addition, CMHN is in the process of developing a 31-unit master-lease cooperative serving primarily Hispanic families in the Humboldt Park community. Starting in the spring of 2001, CMHN began administering Chicago's first Natural Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) program. Currently serving four tenant-controlled properties in Chicago, this program brings health and social services to families allowing them to age in place. Finally, CMHN has begun a Public Information and Advocacy Campaign to promote limited-equity housing cooperatives as a tool to address the Chicago area's affordable housing crisis. The Campaign focuses on the areas of resource development, education, and policy and has already made great strides in expanding the public's awareness of housing cooperatives as a vibrant, sustainable and innovative housing model.
The Membership/Advocacy Associate will work both the Director Advocacy and the Director of Membership Services. The Advocacy work will include:
The amount of time spent on any of these projects will depend on the interests of the intern and the needs of CMHN. The intern will also assist with our annual event held in early June. The intern will have the opportunity to assist with other CMHN projects that he or she may be interested in.
The intern will learn how the cooperative model can provide decent, affordable housing for low-income households, and how the model is being applied in Chicago's current affordable housing environment. The intern will be given many opportunities to understand both the big picture and the intricate details that make housing cooperatives work as an affordable housing tool. Additionally, the intern will see how a network of housing cooperatives functions and fosters "cooperation among cooperatives" through utilizing economies of scale and providing venues for the development of peer relationships.
CMHN is looking for an intern who is self-motivated, with a sense of humor, and an understanding of affordable housing issues. The intern will receive a monthly stipend of $1,000. The position runs from May 15th through September 1st, 2002 (Both the start and end date are flexible).

Cooperative Services, Inc.

Education Intern

Cooperative Services, Inc. (CSI) provides housing for low-income senior citizens. Although our apartments are rentals, the management of the buildings is cooperative in structure and principle. During its 65-year history, CSI has owned dairy, optical, and dental services. For the last 20 years our focus has been entirely on housing. Our current portfolio consists of 45 complexes in four states.
The Education Intern will be working on education and property management and supporting the CSI's Education Department with the preparation and execution of the annual management conference to be held August 8-10, 2002 in Grand Rapids, MI. Responsibilities will include assisting with conferences preparation – registration materials, workshop materials, fliers, etc. and possibly leading a session at the conference. Besides the experience of working in an office the intern will develop skills necessary to deal with a diverse senior population.
The intern should be flexible, able to multi-task, and able to accept direction from others. They should be outgoing and have good oral and written communication skills as well as a sense of humor. The intern will receive a weekly stipend of $250 (i.e. $1,000/month). The position runs from June 1st through August 31st, 2002 (Both the start and end date are flexible).

Circle Pines Center

Circle Pines Center (CPC) is a member owned, not-for-profit center for cooperative education and recreation founded in 1938 by the Central States Cooperative League. The aim of the center is to demonstrate cooperative alternatives for economic and social issues and to teach cooperation as a way of life. CPC offers a summer camp program whose mission is to teach peace, social justice, ecology, and cooperation.
Assistant Program Director

The Assistant Director will work with the Summer Camp Program. Responsibilities include creating all staff and activity schedules, helping with camp orientation, leadership and support for counselors, and managing office hours, adult volunteers, and the camp's co-op store, as well as some evening coverage.

Camp Counselors

The Camp Counselors will work with the Summer Camp Program. Counselors are responsible to be part of the camp community and supervision of campers in all phases of the day. Each counselor is responsible for 8-12 children in their unit.
Counselors can expect to learn nonviolent conflict resolution models, problem solving, child development stages, and interpersonal communication skills..
This position begins on June 16 and ends August 11. In addition to room and board, Counselors receive a $110 weekly stipend.
Summer Camp Staff

Circle Pines is looking for a summer camp staff to provide necessary personnel for the camp program. Three positions are open:
(1) - Lifeguard; responsibilities include guarding swimmers and helping to lead activities
(1) - Utility Worker; responsibilities include cleaning with campers and general camp upkeep
(1) - Maintenance; responsibilities include leading construction projects with campers and general maintenance

Health Officer

The Health Officer will be working with the Summer Camp Program and will be responsible for the health and safety of campers and camp staff. Duties include organizing the wellness center: inventory, cleanliness, health forms, logs & meds.; health screenings; teaching first aid; and responding to all medical emergencies & non-emergencies at camp.
The intern can expect to learn interview skills, problem solving, and organization skills. Intern must have some experience in direct health care; be certified in advanced first-aid and CPR or higher certification (EMT, LPN, RN, MD).
In addition to room and board, $1500 stipend will be paid. Start date is June 10 and the end date is August 11.
Kitchen Manager

The Kitchen Manager will be working with the Summer Camp Program and will be responsible for planning menus and ordering food for up to 150 people. Responsibilities also include supervising cooks, and assisting with the preparation of meals. This intern will have the opportunity to learn supervisory skills, gain intensive cooking experience, and learn to teach children about cooking.
Experience cooking in a commercial kitchen, food ordering, and management skills desired. The internship begins June 10 and ends August 11. In addition to room and board, Staff receives a $120 weekly stipend.
Kitchen Staff

The Kitchen Staff will be working with the Summer Camp program. The general responsibility is to assist with all kitchen duties. These interns can expect to learn how to cook in a commercial setting, how to work with children in the kitchen, and develop good interpersonal skills. Archivist

The Archivist will be working with the Summer Camp Program. The internship will involve continuation of the organization of CPC's historical materials, especially images, and the creation of an alumni network as well as the implementation of co-op education programs at the summer camp. The archivist intern will learn about co-op history, archiving techniques, database management, and integrating youth into the daily work environment.
In addition to room and board, this intern will receive a total stipend of $1,000. This position begins June 16 and ends August 11.

Finance Intern

The Finance Intern will be responsible for the development of all house/member transmittals and house closings. S/he may also be involved in setting up an automated bookkeeping system. This job requires expertise in Excel and experience in accounting.
The intern will work directly with and be supervised by the ICC Director of Financial Services. S/he is expected to attend all staff meetings and is strongly encouraged to be involved in the activities of the ICC finance committee.

Education Coordinator

MSU-SHC is interested in hiring an intern to help our co-op develop stronger ties within our houses, within our co-op system (of 12 houses) and within our community. The Education Coordinator will be responsible for the development of a plan for future house officers detailing how they can help their housemates bond within the house, help the houses interact together and reach out to the community. We would like the intern to put together a binder to be used by house officers that would outline possibilities and resources to make this easier for each successive group of residents. The intern will be given a pretty free hand to come up with events, suggested trips, outreach program, etc. but will be under the direction of the Executive Director and the Executive Committee for training and guidance.

The National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) is the oldest national association for cooperatives and was established in 1916. NCBA is the only cross-industry association for cooperatives. NCBA's mission is to "develop, advance, and protect cooperative enterprise." NCBA's program focuses on six initiatives: Co-op Education, Co-op Communications, Co-op Public Policy, Co-op Business Development, International Co-op Development, and Finance and Administration.
The Education Intern's responsibilities will include research for advertising prospects for co-op newspaper; research and secure materials and information for online co-op library and museum; membership marketing particularly for individual members; conference support for East Coast Worker Co-op Conference; update child care database; and general support of dotCoop initiative.
Knowledge of introductory marketing & advertising, member recruitment, meeting facilitation, and co-op values & principles is desirable.

The Office Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the communication of housing and administrative information among management, residents and non-residents. The position has extensive contact with residents and prospective residents and serves as an assistant to the Franklin/Mueller Co-op office staff.
Primary Accountabilities include: Assisting with telephone and door coverage and message delivery; providing information on apartments and assisting with the screening/application process; assisting with showing apartments to potential applicants; helping to maintain a computerized waiting list file of potential applicants; receiving and inputting requested work orders from residents; maintaining a level of flexibility with all staff, offering assistance of others as directed; general office assistance including making copies, keeping the office tidy, and running errands as needed; working effectively and respectfully with individuals without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, marital status, political affiliation, sexual orientation, status w/ regard to public assistance, membership or activity in local commissions, disability, sex or age.
Position Requirements: Previous bookkeeping and record keeping experience; previous computer experience, preferably with word processing or personal computer; ability to coordinate several tasks at once; demonstrated customer service skills; good interpersonal and communication skills.
Desired Skills: Knowledge of policies and procedures for the cooperatives; familiarity with the CAMS system to enter rent deposits, other charges; ability to direct residents to appropriate board, staff, committee regarding policies and procedures; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and Access; friendly, courteous, flexible and responsible; ability to maintain consistent hours.

College Houses is a non-profit organization that provides low-cost housing for students as well as educating them on democracy and how a democracy should work. This organization puts a strong emphasis on student involvement and we encourage the students to participate in every aspect of their co-op.
We are looking for someone to design web-pages for the five houses. We want potential members to be able to look at the finished product and get a better idea about the actual house and the make-up of the house.
The intern will be working primarily on his or her own. The intern will be working with students as well as other staff to reach the final goal. The intern will be expected to know most of the web design and how to design a web page. We are willing to provide whatever he or she may need to complete the duties.

House Owners Manual & Education Materials Intern

Madison Community Co-ops (MCC) started over 30 years ago with 2 houses. We now own 11 properties. Our education of members is done through orientations and informative dinners, where we have speakers on topics that MCC members suggest. We offer affordable housing to the entire Madison area but our houses are mainly located near the campus.
We are looking for an intern to help MCC houses that want help with House Owners' Manuals which include house policies, work-job descriptions, house meeting process and membership policies. The intern will work extensively with house members to compile and edit house decisions and records and putting them in electronic form and being back drafts to the houses. The intern will be exposed to vast amounts of information about the processes, management, communication systems, history, and organization of a small group, member-run co-op. MCC is looking for a confident self-starter with a journalistic attitude.
This is a 20-30 hour/week position with a start date of June 1 and an end date of August 13 (the start date is flexible). The intern will be paid $9.34/hr based on a 30-hour workweek.

The Federation of Southern Cooperatives

Sustainable Development Internship

The Federation of Southern Co-operatives was established in 1967 to serve rurally communities in the Black belt South through cooperative economic development, technical assistance, agricultural training and research and community based advocacy.
The intern will assist the Rural Training & Research Center (RTRC) Director increase its capacity to provide training and research for farmers' cooperatives in the Black belt South. Specifically, the intern will help monitor and maintain sustainable agriculture demonstration projects; maintain a research log for use by farmers co-ops; develop the RTRC archive and research library; and collect data and build database for Black farmer/landowner registry.
The intern will learn about the history of the cooperative movement in the Black belt. The intern will also learn about some of the cutting edge trends in agriculture and agricultural research and will receive training in the principles of cooperative development, sustainable agriculture, and community-based research. Applicants should be comfortable and familiar working in southern, poor, Black communities. African and/or African American applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Cooperative Forestry Research Assistant

Established in 1985, the mission of Cooperative Development Services (CDS) is to promote the development of cooperative businesses, communities and other organizations, which operate in a cooperative manner. CDS provides business consulting, planning and educational services to build and strengthen these organizations. CDS has worked closely with the Sustainable Woods Cooperative, based in Lone Rock, Wisconsin, and with over a dozen other forest owner cooperatives and associations throughout the Upper Midwest on developing business plans, organizational structure, grant and loan procurement and member equity structuring, among other technical assistance.
The intern will work with CDS in its efforts to provide technical assistance to forest owner cooperatives and associations in formation or in early stages of operation in Wisconsin and, to a more limited extent, the rest of the Upper Midwest. In particular, the intern will assist these organizations in two capacities: 1) in the recruitment of woodland owner members and 2) in the development and implementation of landowner education programs that meet the needs and expectations of these members. In addition, the intern may be expected to participate in grant writing and miscellaneous research related to forest owner cooperative development. Through phone interviews and dialog by email, as well as occasional site visits, the intern will provide valuable assistance to both CDS and the cooperative it serves. Expected outcomes include the successful implementation of education service programs for several forest owner cooperatives in Wisconsin and a written report that can serve as a guide for future cooperatives seeking assistance in landowner educational program development.
This will be a dynamic position, requiring strong communication skills, including interview and writing skills, and creative strategic thinking ability. Some knowledge of forest ecology or forest industry is beneficial but not required.
Training provided will bring the intern up to speed on the history of the forest owner cooperative movement, the intricacies of forest owner co-op and association development, and the particular circumstances of several such groups in Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest.
This is a 25 hour/week position with a start date of June 1 and an end date of September 20 (the start and end dates are flexible). The intern will be paid a biweekly stipend of $500.

Hyde Park Membership Intern

The Hyde Park Co-op was established in 1932 as a Buying Co-op. Since then, we have expanded considerably. We now have 3 locations and serve as more conventional grocery stores. The Co-op emphasis remains strong, however. In particular, we are dedicated to providing members with the information they need to be educated consumers and informed cooperative owners. We work to support other cooperatives and community organizations through sponsoring activities, raising money for needy causes, and offering our member room for community organizations.
An internship is available starting as early as May-June. The end date and duration of the internship is flexible. The internship involves 40 hours of work a week and pays a weekly salary of $320 ($8/hour). The internship will involve work in both marketing and member education. Job tasks will include assisting with membership recruitment, sales, phones, cashiering, and customer service and relations.
The intern will receive one-on-one hands-on training. The intern will learn how a food co-op interacts with its membership and about the important role a large food co-op plays in the community.
Desired skills include marketing experience, basic computer knowledge (spreadsheet and word processing programs), article-writing experience (including experience with publication design and lay-out), and experience in co-op member education.
