Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies
The Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS) brings together faculty in our Department with other area specialists in a number of disciplines within the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (e.g. Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Linguistic and Sociology) as well as the Schools of Law, Business Administration, and Public Health. The M.A. program at CMENAS is designed as a general interdisciplinary introduction to the area and to one or more of its languages. It is intended to provide broad area and language training at the graduate level for students with either academic or professional interests. It is most appropriate for students who are committed to the area and interested in an interdisciplinary approach at the M.S. level. The center is supported by the U.S. Department of Education: organizes and sponsors numerous activities (language circles, lectures and colloquia by visiting scholars), and administers fellowships such as the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS). If you would like more information about their M.A. program and/or the FLAS fellowship, please contact the Administrative Assistant at CMENAS / SSWB Room 4640 / Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1106 / 734-764-0350 Fax 734-764-8523 / email: cmenas@umich.edu.
The application deadline for FLAS is February 1, 2002.
