Only students with high scholastic records can be considered
for awards and

appointments. All applications for departmental funding and GSI positions
in the Department of Near Eastern Studies must be made on the application
form enclosed in the graduate packet. A completed departmental funding
application must include a statement of purpose.
The deadline to
submit your application for departmental funding is December 16, 2005.
Fellowships
University fellowship and scholarship awards range from tuition
scholarships to full fellowships with stipends of up to $12,000 per
academic year.
Because of the scarcity of Departmental fellowship funds,
students should seek alternative methods of financing their studies.

The fellowships administered by the Department of Near
Eastern Studies are the following:
Waterman Fellowship for Biblical Studies
Rackham Block Grant
The College of Literature, Science and Arts Regents' Fellowship
George G. Cameron Fellowship in Ancient Studies
George and Celeste Hourani Memorial Fellowship in Islamic Studies
Graduate Student Instructor
A
Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) is a salaried teaching appointment.A
GSI generally conducts two or four discussion sections weekly in one
of the introductory courses or teaches language courses. Their primary
responsibilities include instructing plus reading and grading papers,
holding office hours and doing some tutoring of students. GSI's with
at least a quarter-time appointment (.25 - 10 hours per week) receive
a complete tuition waiver with staff benefits. Appointments at a lower
rate receive prorated tuition waivers.There is no separate application
for GSI positions. The departmental funding application will apply
towards the limited GSI positions and/or departmental fellowships
which are available.
Other Fellowship Sources
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are available
for students with an interest in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Turkish.

Rackham
Graduate School also offers the Rackham Merit Fellowship for members
of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in graduate
education in the U.S. There are also some partial scholarships including
the Non-Traditional Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded to returning
students who have been out of school for at least five years. Candidates
for these fellowships are nominated by the Department.
Loans and Work-Study
U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents applying for financial aid
in the form of loans or work-study from the University must submit
the FAF (Financial Aid Form) and financial aid transcripts from their
previous universities or colleges. For further information, please
