The focus of research in my lab is to understand the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We are studying the production and secretion of Ab peptides (the major component of amyloid plaques in AD brain) from amyloid precursor protein (APP) in a human neuronal cell culture model (NT2-N cells) and in transfected cell lines. We are interested in the regulation of APP metabolism and Ab secretion by APP-binding proteins such as X11a and the chaperone BiP/GRP78. Other pursuits include receptor-mediated regulation of APP metabolism in NT2-N cells by neurotransmitters. One goal of these projects is to suggest therapeutic strategies to delay the onset or slow progression of amyloid deposition, dementia, and AD.
