I am investigating the neurochemical basis of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA)using positron emission tomography (PET) with [11C]DTBZ and [11C]PMP.

Additional investigations are focused on the post-ganglionic sympathetic innervation of the heart in PD, DLB, MSA, and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and dopaminergic innervation of the striatum. These studies utilize PET with [11C]DTBZ and [11C]HED.

Another set of investigations concerns Alzheimer's disease, testing the hypothesis that in the early stages of the disease, the larger the area of cortical hypometabolism the faster the rate of progression of the disease. This study utilizes PET with [18F]FDG, [11C]DTBZ, and [11C]PIB.

In studies with Cortex Pharmaceuticals, I am studying the effects of an Ampakine upon recent memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease, studying cerebral blood flow changes during neuropsychological testing using [15O)H2O.

In studies with Elan and Wyeth pharmaceutical companies, I am serving as Chair of the Safety Monitoring Committee for passive immunotherapy for Alzheimer's disease.
