Neubacher Award


Each October, during Investing in Ability Week, the James Neubacher Award is presented to a University of Michigan faculty or staff member, student, or alumna/alumnus for significant achievements in:

  • promoting acceptance and awareness of people with disabilities,
  • advocating for the civil rights of people with disabilities, or
  • removing barriers to full participation in programs and services by people with disabilities.

Established by U-M’s Council for Disability Concerns in October 1990, the Award is a memorial to Jim Neubacher, an alumnus who was also acolumnist for the Detroit Free Press and an advocate for equal rightsand opportunities for people with disabilities. The Award includes a stipend provided by the Office of the President.
