Tips for success in NRE 301: Ecological Issues
Lecture and Exams
- Be there both physically AND mentally: Missing class is a
double whammy by reducing your points on quizzes and by missing
material covered on exams.
- Read the assigned chapter BEFORE attending lecture. That way
lecture can reinforce subjects you have already be introduced
to.
- Take ORGANIZED notes: Try to take notes in an outline form
and underline important topics and those topics covered heavily
in lecture. Don't try to write everything down but try to pinpoint
main ideas instead.
- If the lecturer goes over something you don't understand ASK
QUESTIONS. Don't wait until the exam to find out you really didn't
know what he/she was talking about.
When studying, COMPARE NOTES with friends to emphasize important
points and to see what you may have missed. Look at your notes
as if you were assigned the task of writing the exams and QUIZ
EACH OTHER with questions you have written.
Discussion Section
- If you don't understand an assignment please ASK FOR HELP.
We are available through e-mail, during office hours, and briefly
before and after lecture.
- When completing assignments please read the questions CAREFULLY.
Make sure you answered ALL of them and recheck after you have
completed the assignment.
- PARTICIPATE actively in class: Not only is it part of your
grade, but you'll have tons more fun!
- SHARE relevant material with the class (i.e. from other courses,
the news, etc.)
- Remember that some exam questions will cover discussion material.
Discussion section is not just a time to zone out and relax!
