Field Courses

Spring Term:
Spring Ecosystems and Plants, NRE 402:  Taught during the
spring term, focusing on plants below your knees in natural
ecosystems.

Fall Term:
Forest Ecology, NRE 435: Taught during Fall Term.  Woody
plants and landscape ecosystems emphasized;  trips to northern
Michigan and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Summer Term:
University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI:
Many field courses are taught at this field station near Pellston
in the northern tip of the Lower peninsula.  In the summer
session (June-August) the school of Natural Resources and
Environment offers the course Habitats and Organisms,
NRE 330/507.  The SNRE general ecology requirement is met
by taking this course.  General Ecology (Bio 381) is taught
during the spring session (May-June).  Other challenging field
courses are also offered at the BioStation, including the following:

Biology of Birds
Biology of Insects
Biology and Ecology of Fish
Ecology of Streams and Rivers
Conservation Biology
 

Botany Lab Courses

Fall Term:
Systematic Botany, Bio 459:  Usually taught in Fall Term by
Dr. Bill Anderson.  Plant families and evolutionary
relationships emphasized.

Plant Physiology, Bio 209/409 and 210/410:  Usually taught
during Fall Term by Dr. Hiroshi Ikuma.  Lab may be taken with
the course or lecture may be taken alone.  Emphasis on the
inner workings of plants, such as phytochromes, hormones, and
biochemistry.
