DEPARTMENTAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESETIONS

Q: What does a department need to do before they send a computer out for surplus?

A: The computer must be sanitized. For instructions, please visit the COMPUTER PREPARATION PAGE

Q: May a PCard be used for purchases?

A: No: Only a Shortcode can be used.

Q: Can you hold items after a department purchases them?

A: UM Departments can have Property Disposition hold items until transportation is arranged.

Q: How do I arrange to send surplus to the University?

A: You must call to set up an appointment with Larry Baker (734) 763-7241.

Q: Do you pick up surplus property?

A: No, Property Disposition does not pick up surplus property. After your delivery date is established with Property Disposition, you need to arrange to bring the surplus to our warehouse. You may bring it yourself or call University Moving and Trucking at 764-2487.

Q: I have an employee that is interested in buying surplus property from my department, what is the process?

A: You must accurately fill out a Declaration of Surplus Form and fax it to us (Fax: 763-2006). Property Disposition will price the item and fax the declaration back to you with the estimated value. The employee then needs to send Property Disposition a check for the correct amount (plus 6% sales tax) with the Declaration of Surplus Form or they may pay in person at our warehouse during general public shopping hours. We will give the employee a receipt and once they show it to the department, they can take the property home.

Q: Who do I contact for an appraisal?

A: Steve Sinelli - For prices on furniture, machinery, lab equipment and medical equipment.
Larry Dixon - For prices on computers and accessories.

Q: I have surplus property and another department wishes to buy the surplus from us, what is the procedure?

A: University of Michigan departments can transfer equipment and assets to other departments without Property Disposition involvement. However, Property Control (Phone: 764-5443) must be notified of this equipment transfer. Property Disposition can assist the selling department in pricing an item.
