Aazhoningwa'igan (Bandolier Bag) Sewing Phrases

The following phrases were used during a workshop presented by staff from Ziibiwing Cultural Center at the 16th Annual Anishinaabe Family Language and Culture Camp.

Today you will sew a bandolier bag.
Noongo g'gaa gashkigwaadaan aazhooningwa'igan.

First, you will iron them two pieces.
Ntam g'wii zhooshkwegaanan niizh kidagiiganan.

Be careful, the iron is hot.
Aangwaamizin, zhooshkwega'igan gizhaapkige.


Be careful, don't burn it.
Aangwaamizin, gegwa jaagaakizke.

Fasten them the pattern pieces to your fabric pins you use them.
Zagaakwaanan dbizhiganan gdaagiigening, zhaabonigans objikaazanan.

Next, you will cut them out, the pattern pieces.
Miidash, g'da giishkwadimaanan dbizhiganan.

You will iron your fabric design on top of the bag.
G'wii-zhooshkwegaan mzinigwajiganan giji mshkimaadang.

Next you will sew your design on top the bandolier bag.
Miidash, g'gaa gashkigwaadaan mzinigwajigan giiji aazhooningwa'iganing.

Will you please thread it this needle?
G'da naabidoomwaan ina maanda zhaabonigan?


Sew it together, your bag.
Maandoogwaadamaan gdo'aazhoningwa'igan.

Cut the threads.
Giishkwaadamaag zaabaabiinhsan.

It is beautiful, your purse!
Gnaajiwan gdo zhooniyaa-mshkimad.

Did you make it your bandolier bag?
G'gii zhitoon ina gdo-aazhoningwa'igan?

Yes, I made my bandolier bag.
Enh, n'gii zhitoon ndo-aazhoningwa'igan.
